Goodbye cruel world.... aaaaahhhhhh.... THUMP!

I guess jumping off a 2 foot high bridge isn't that big of a statement. However a promise is a promise. Now, back to your regularly scheduled programs.

DirecTV's overall plan and future is still best overall,........ They also have to appeal to 15+ million not just we HD heads.
While I agree with that, it really can't hurt to throw us HD heads a bone every once in a while. ESPN2-HD was nice to have for college football, so they get:up :up :up for that. But it would seem that adding a few more national channels would be more in their best interests than adding the 35th and 36th HD-LIL's in 2006 vs. 2007.

So if D* decides to add a few more national channels, I will celebrate with some Basil Haydens and a Cohiba. If they don't, I'll turn to the Booker's and drown my sorrows.;)

I am surprised there are not more porn HD channels on satellite. Isn't that were the money is at? Or are they going to add it but not advertise it a lot but keep it under the covers so to speak.

Did D* announce any new national HD channels at the CES at 6:30 PM PST TH Jan 5 ? Since E* announced UHD, I wondered if D* would be announcing TNTHD.

I've not seen a press release announcing this and I've seen no post from Scott saying that anything has been announced.

While no one loves HD more than me, am I the only one who is thinking that Directv is doing just what they said they would do?
2005- Launch new Ka sats and design the Mpeg4 system
2006- roll out local HD in major markets.
2007 Add more HD LiL and national HD.
I don't see any national HD in that time line until 2007.....AFAIK it's still 2006:)

Actually, according to the original press release they were supposed to start rolling out the LIL HD channels by the middle of the 2005. It also said that D10 and D11 would have the capacity to provide up to 150 national HD channels. It didn't say that there wouldn't be any new national HD channels until 2007. They did add ESPN2-HD in 2005 so why not some more?

Doesn't matter to me at least, Comcast's due to install on 1/21. I tried them last fall and our system isn't bad PQ wise and they've just recently started mirroring the analog channels on digital so the old analog PQ issue is gone. With the DBS buy back program my pricing is fairly competative for the next 16 months by which time hopefully D* will be done with whatever they're going to do with HD.

CVC is the devil, so I'm probably not going anywhere. If D* added TNT-HD and finally got their act together with neighboring locals, I'd be a very happy camper.

I could swear that in one of those press releases it said spaceway 1 & 2 could provide up to 50 national HD channels and the other two sats (D10 & D11) going up in 2007 would provide the other 100 national HD channels giving them a total capacity of about 150 National HD + all the HD LIL markets they were planning to launch. Maybe I am wrong but I am pretty sure I remember seeing something more along these lines.

The announcements mean the "Spaceway System" will be able to provide the 1,500 HD LIL and 150 national HD channels. The spaceway system is the ENTIRE 4 satellites: SW1, SW2, DTV10 and DTV11.

* In September 2004, DIRECTV announced the planned launch of four new next-generation satellites aimed at significantly expanding its programming capacity in local and national high-definition (HD) channels, as well as capacity for new interactive and enhanced services and standard-definition programming.
* The first two of these satellites, Spaceway 1 and Spaceway 2, will launch in 2005 with programming being offered to consumers by the middle of the year. These satellites will have the capacity for more than 500 local HD channels. With these satellites, DIRECTV will have the ability to bring local HD programming to most of the U.S. population, as well as continuing to expand standard-definition local offerings and other enhancements.
* The next two satellites, DIRECTV 10 and DIRECTV 11, will launch in early 2007. These satellites will have the capacity for more than 1,000 additional local HD channels, more than 150 national HD channels, and other new programming offerings. These satellites will provide DIRECTV the capability to bring local and national HD programming and other advanced services to every U.S. household. Consumers will be able to receive all of these services, as well as existing DIRECTV(R) programming, with a single small satellite dish.
* DIRECTV 10 and DIRECTV 11, to be built by Boeing, will be among the largest and most powerful Ka-band satellites ever launched. The satellites, which will take advantage of DIRECTV's advanced transmission techniques and state-of-the-art video compression technology, will deliver national HD programming and will be capable of supporting spot beams carrying local HD broadcast channels in all 50 states. Boeing will also build a third satellite for DIRECTV that will serve as a ground spare.
* The Spaceway 1 and Spaceway 2 satellites, also being built by Boeing, are approaching completion and the satellites were recently converted to be capable of offering both video and a broadband Internet service. Boeing is also constructing a third Spaceway satellite. "Today's announcement is one of the most significant in the history of DIRECTV. We are reinforcing our commitment to best serve our customers with the most attractive and compelling array of programming services available," said Mitch Stern, president and CEO, DIRECTV.

I can assure you that you didn't read this anywhere on the web as an official press release nor anything semi official.

I think D* is headed in the right direction so I'll stick it out. Also, I'm hooked on NFL Sunday Ticket so wouldn't switch unless another provider offered it - which isn't in the cards anytime soon.
I had both E* and D* until a couple of months ago. I was with E* for 8 years when I made the switch. I decided that two sat providers is sort of silly. I used to have V* before they went under, and thought the V* channels on E* would make E* a better choice. The truth is that I rarely watched the V* channels as the content was entirely repetitive - nothing new to see for months on end.
I'm happy with my decision thus far. I've got an mpeg4 dish up and get local HD channels. I'm impressed by the PQ on the H-20 receiver. I've also got a good attic antenna for HD locals, and think that the locals coming off the dish generally have better PQ. At least as good.

I agree, I just thought I remembered reading it or hearing about it in that fashion. I'd be a lot happier if it were indeed the way I thought it was going to be with the new sats. I'm feeling pretty let down by D* at this time, Sunday Tickets over, we have two new state of the art satellites up in the air and not a single thing mentioned to improve our HD packs besides LIL which I already get so it's nothing exciting for me although I am sure it is for a lot of people. The only good thing I can think of is I get to continue to use my HD Tivo for quite a while longer than I anticipated.

I'm as equally as frustrated with the current lineup of channels (ie, if you can deliver 17 religion and shopping channels, you can get me TNT-HD).

Having said that, I'd bet that D* won't make significant leaps in national HD content until the industry hits some target for HDTVs sold. From a business standpoint it makes sense that you wouldn't invest time and $ in content that a small portion of your customer base can use. The SW launches are really setting the stage for late 06 and 07 when most mainstream consumers will buy really cheap HDTVs. As an early adopter of anything electronic, I want to punch Rupert in the face for teasing me but I can see the business reason. In the end, he knows that NFL fans like me won't leave until that contract runs out.

Really ??? I find a much better picture with my OTA vs using the D* receiver.

just my opinion, everyone's set up is different, so there is no right or wrong.

Today is the day of the 'big' press announcement session at CES. So far none of the press releases haven't mentioned the turn up of any new national HD channels, such as TNT-HD, Cinemax-HD or Starz-HD.
If there aren't any new channels announced as available or coming soon, as in a couple of weeks, will you stick it out with D* or go to another provider? Just curious what the mood of the group is out there.

Now i guess the question should be, What have you done since Directv didnt add any new hd ?
