Right now I have the $10 a month HD essentials pack and I really like it so far although I haven't had it long. I'm a little confused what will happen to it come August. Will I still be able to keep this or will my rates go up? Not sure I want to pay a whole lot more but at the same time I like the HD.

The new HD Packages are a joke. They need to fire whomever the marketing "guru" is that came up with the bronze, silver, gold, Platinum, Turbo idea. You need a flippin Ph.D to even begin to figure the differences out as the average Joe. Choosing a satellite package should not require an hours worth of study and contemplation. They need to KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid), I think this is just a super confusing way to raise their rates for folks converting to HD Only.

Just imagine how confusing this is going to be for the Indian CSRs? The have enough trouble with DVRAdvantage as it is, btw I think DVRAdvantage was a good marketing idea.

Why?

I would love 10 to 15 more, but why are they owed?

Cause my bill has not changed in years, but my commercial free HD count dropped by 10 or so after removing/adding HDs several months ago. With the addition of the Premium HDs, Dish is bringing their commercial free HD count back up to or higher than what it was before.

They owed premium HD channels to their highest paying customers and they are giving it finaly.

A possible correction

It seems that what we may be losing is Discovery Theather, and HD Nets because it seems that we are going to get only the HD channels that we already subscribe to in SD. So instead of gaining more we may possibly be loosing. I guess we will not know till august 1. If you want the additional channels like the above mentioned, Fishing, MGM, so on. Then you would need an additional $10.The only bright side to it is that existing customers will be able to get a free 3 month trial of the additional package.

Dish is contractually obligated to include HDNet in the lowest tier HD pack. They have always done that with HD Theatre as well, but I am not sure if they are obligated to do so. Personally I think the HD Essentials Pack is the best deal Dish has available right now - all the HD channels in your AT pack that are currently available, plus new ones as they are added. Not sure how long they will be able to keep this up without increasing the price of the AT packs or the Essentials pack. IMHO Dish should roll the HD equivalent channels in to the AT packs for the same price as an incentive to upgrade. Encourage current subs to "see what you are missing in HD" or something like that. The quicker they get people moved off of MPEG2 the quicker they can add more channels.
