What is this world comming to?

I work for state government and have today (Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!) and Friday off. I would not ask for an install of anything to be done today or on Christmas. Even if I weren't spending time with my family, I would think that others would want to as well and I wouldn't expect someone to come out and do an install on a holiday no more than I'd expect my bank to be open.

I see America changing. I'm 45 and have seen quite a few social and cultural changes in those 45 years, not all of them good. People are far more selfish and self-centered now than they used to be even 10-15 years ago and they are (generally) far less forgiving.

Just my $0.02...

I never would have thought to ask someone to work on a holiday and would not expect to work myself. Some people cannot afford not to work thought especially when they get paid overtime or double pay with the way bills are anymore.

(Making a reappearance on this site after asking some questions a couple months ago)

When I called to get a super dish install they said today was open, but it was Thanksgiving. I never even considered asking someone to work today for me and the CSR was also curteous enough to those workers to suggest another day.

My two cents. No installs on holidays. As it happens, I worked today (telco repair) and acknowledge someone has to keep essential services working. But not installations. I'm sorry to hear that Dish does this.

Well my neice got off of work at 4 pm and her bf is going to bring my brother and nephew over. Going to be a late thanksgiving meal lol. I have not ate all day waiting for it. I should have a real good appetite.

It makes me sick that you have to work on Thanksgiving. This is television...not a freakin' hospital! People are not going to die because they can't get their DISH on Thanksgiving. Errr, this just pisses me off. If I were your boss, you would have the day off (paid).

My nephew got his day off paid and my neice's boyfriend was able to pick her up after she got off of work at 4 pm and pick my nephew up (his car broke down) along with my brother (his heater does not work and its in the 20's today) and bring them up for thanksgiving. We did not have the meal until about 8:30 pm but better late than never.

Two of the most important days of the year to get off is Thanksgiving and Christmas especially if you have family.

So heres how the day went.

1:30 am the fire alarm goes off in the hotel, by 1:40 I go down to see a fire truck down at the end of the building and a pile of burnt wet towels that had caught fire in the hotel laundry dryer. 7:00 I'm up and off to work, fix an install that wasn't done right, last job reschedules not wanting to wait and have the job done right. 11:00 I pick up a job to help another tech out and after he shows up we have it done by 1:30pm.

Back to the hotel for the rest of the day and sleep for the next 14 hours thanks to having the flue......in miami.....wich really sucks having the flue here towards the end of my work trip, but atleast I will be headed home by the end of this weekend. I was not really surprised to see that there was allot of people working yesterday, city buses, garbage pick up, many retail stores, basically allot of non essential services wich the term "services" is the key.

This country has changed its foundation from manufacturing to service and people expect to have something done when they want it done and thats what the service industry caters to. I've often had to profess respect for anyone in the cable industry as there is always techs on call on a 24/7 basis, dish and direct don't have this.......yet.

Have you ever wondered how much a pair of jeans would cost if levi's hadn't shipped its manufacturing operations over to third world countries to only have to pay a malnourished mother of five earn $2 a month? I really wish that I could find out what the CEO's of this countries companies believe in, do they believe in the foundation of family and its responsibilities that we as parents and spouses have to it? Do they believe that its important for a parent to be home on christmas morning to see the faces of our children as they open up theyre presents and the look of having found the greatest treasure ever crosses through theyre eyes with each box they open? Do they believe in the importance of being with ones own family to honor the many soldiers who have fallen in defence of this country, to celebrate our freedom on our day of independance? I wonder if they believe these things as they sit at home with theyre families on these holidays.
