The Land Of OZ
Do customers really need their Dish installed on Thanksgiving and Christmas day!

I think the companys in this great land of ours need to wake up. The all mighty dollar can wait a day, on at least these two days.

Does Dish really feel they are going to loose a customer because they can't get it installed on these two days.

I say to the companys out there to wake the F*** up. Remember that the people that have to install these things have family's as well.

I bet Charlie will be home enjoying his holiday!!

Does anybody else think this is just plain stupid?

I agree that they shouldn't be doing business on holidays. I was a victim to a holiday install last Christmas and guess what? Nobody showed which interrupted the holiday festivities.

I installed two satellite systems on Christmas Eve about three or four years ago. They lived beside of each other, one were the parents of another. It was VERY cold outside. I couldn't afford not to do it.

Times change, this isn't the America of 30 years ago, people want what they want and when they want regardless of what the consequences are and what is lost. I don't like the way things are in todays America anymore than you do, but it is progress if you want to call it that and progress is what this country has been built on. Face it Dave we're getting old and our kids will be in our shoes in 30 or 40 years complaining about how the internet used to be easy and has gotten complicated with the addition of virtual reality headsets.

Dave, I agree, who do you work for?? If I was a contractor I would close my calender. If I was a company, my company would be closed. I don't work holidays. let me guess, they expect you to work Sundays too.... LOL

No kidding.... people's spelling is terrible!

I know of an installer that said he was going to quit and work for another company because they would not give him any days off (he wanted one day off for his child's birthday) and they work him everyday including Sundays.

I'm happy that I have a reasonable boss. He's a family man. He won't work weekends for anything short of a natural disaster, and doesn't ask his people to.

He appreciates that I'm willing to do Saturday installs when needed - it's MY choice. I'm single, so couldn't care less what day of week it is - except I don't work when the Broncos are playing or there's a Cup race. :)

He's closing the shop at noon tomorrow. Reopens Monday. I'm doing a DirecWay on Friday - my choice.

Yeah... progress at what cost? Everyone should take time for family, especially if they have Kids. My dad worked a lot on Saturdays and into the evening when I was younger. One thing he never did was work on Sunday's or Holiday's. Once in a while he would be on call for a Sunday or holiday, but that was it. He always made sure that there was those family times, and his Father did the same. I'm proud to say that I do that in my own family and there is not one divorce in my family as far back as we can recall our generations. We are not perfect by any means, but we are close and all have a genuine love for each other... especially husbands and wives.

But to each his own, that's why we live in America!

I agree with you joedekock, I think everyone should have reserved time for their family and children. You only have one life to live and everyone deserves a break. You should enjoy at least part of your life here on this earth.

I completely agree. I work for a living and to support my family. I don't live for the job. I do take my job seriously, but my family comes first, and then comes just nothing for a long time and then the job. I am married since five years and when I look at my wife I still have those butterflies or whatever you call it. She comes first in my life, and then the rest.

The idea of the traditional family and its values is slipping away fast anymore, look at what kids do in todays world and compare that to when you were a kid. But really its more than just the changing image of the American family, its the changing face of America as a whole. Our has society has changed so much over the last 25 years and ideal's that once defined our way of life have been replaced with ones that fit todays lifestyle.

Tomorrow Im working here in Miami, Im rolling out with a smaller work load but there are some techs that have a normal days route, Ive heard rumours that my home office is closed for turkey day wich happens from time to time. Its not just the fact that Charlie wants this to be a service company that works 365, its also the fact that people just dont care that while they are sitting down to a turkey dinner with theyr family that I will be in theyr living room hooking up theyr hd monitor so they can sit down to watch football. This isnt the first thanksgiving that Ive worked and it wont be the last, and if xmas falls on one of my normal work days then I expect that there will be jobs waiting to be installed.

Oh and this is what really really REALLY ticks me off about these people, they have the gall to say " I didnt know you guys worked on holidays", I get this each time I work a holiday and I reply with " I didnt realize that my customers had no idea what date the holiday was on", or I say " well you could have always asked for a diferent day" at wich point I always get the same answer of " I was told there was no other day".

Point is is that what we hold near and dear to our hearts and what we believe in is increasingly a thing of the past, another 30 years and holidays will take a back seat to every day life I bet, maybe in 100 years there wont be any holidays at all.

Van,

That is the reason something needs to be done NOW! Allowing these higher ups to just say piss on the little guy has to stop. If it was not for the people in the field these same higher ups would not have all they have.

I am not just talking about D* and E*. I am looking at all theses companies. WAL-MART was never open on these days when Sam was alive. Now after he is dead, and nobody cares about the people that work for a living, these places are open. This kind of thinking needs to stop.

The world will not end, the company will not fail, if you take a couple of days to be with your family for the HOLIDAY!

Anybody remeber the movie SCROOGE?

This world is nothing but greed anymore. Like my co-worker the other day. He hasn't had a single day off on vacation in the past 2 years. Then he took a week of this week for the first time. It lasted 'til Tuesday morning, then the Boss called him about 9.00am to take a delivery route. He's a trucker. First of all it is ridiculous to do that after working two years straight, second I told my co-worker that it's his own fault if he's that stupid to even pick up the damn phone. The CID would have shown who called! Couldn't happen to me, vacation is vacation, no matter what. It wasn't about the money either, he got paid the same money either way.

IMO, everybody has options, it's up to that person to pick the option that works for them. If you do not want to work on certain days then you should not work. If you don't like your company or its' policies don't work for them.

But I do not think it right to tell others what to do IF they are not hurting anyone or doing something that's against the law.

I worked in the entertainment industry for 44 years with 14+ hour days on a regular basis, sometimes 60 days without a day off. My choice. I retired at 55 with no debts and a 7 figure priced house paid in full. Yes I did not spent as much time as I would have liked with kids then, but now wife (43 years) and I have all the time in the world for each other to do whatever we want, with lots of time for children and grandchildren. That was my choice and might not work for others.

Again all I am saying is everyone has the right to live their life as they see fit without other people telling them what right or wrong for them. Yes its' just my option.
