What do you guys think about Direct HD Expansion

All the extra premiums show the same crap at different times. Doesn't a DVR solve what ever problem not having the others creates? Answer: YES
I would like to see more HD channels added but I want them to make the most impact, and that is not by adding premiums.

No, a DVR does not solve the problem. HBO Comedy aired like 8 George Carlin specials after his death. These specials were NOT on the flagship HBO during that month or any month soon after. There are comedy specials archived from the 70's, 80's, and 90's that HBO Comedy airs often that never appear on HBO. They air a lot of their old comedy shows as well. HBO Zone airs movies that HBO hasn't aired in years.

Contrary to popular belief, the multichannels are not just the same stuff airing at different times. It used to be that way in the early 1990's when they had HBO 1, HBO 2, HBO 3, and Showtime 1 and 2. Remember when HBO 3 had a grid between movies showing what was on 1,2 and 3 and HBO 2 only showed the HBO 1 and 2 grid because some people got all three and other cable systems only had 1 and 2. Back in those days, it was the same movies, just more showings.

Now days these multichannels are often specialized. 5 star max is a collection of big box office hits. Thrillermax is thriller, sci-fi, and horror, Wmax is a chick-flick channel, etc... Showtime and Starz do the same thing.

These channels add serious value to the premium suites. I would not subscribe to HBO for whatever it is, $16 a month, if it wasn't for the extra channels. I initially switched from Bright House cable to Dish Network because Dish Network had more of the HD premiums, but I did give up some of the multichannels.

I love having FIOS now and ALL the HBO/MAX channels in HD. it is the best of both worlds, choice and HD.

Premium selection is make or break in my home when selecting a provider. I said earlier that I intend to by a country home where I probably won't get cable. If Dish Network still has more HBO HD selection, I'll switch DirecTV to Dish Network. I'll keep FIOS in my city home as long as they have more HD premiums.

Also, I would NEVER watch a movie on a basic cable channel, HD or not. The only value basic cable channels such as AMC have to me are their original series (ie Breaking Bad), otherwise I would never turn them on. Even with those, I do DVR them. Like the other poster, i only watch news and sports live outside the commercial free premiums.

You premium channel nay-sayers are very much taking their value for granted. Adding the HBOs that DirecTV promised in June of 2007 would increase their subscriber base, which means they'd make more money. More money means more satellites. More satellites means more channels. It would benefit DirecTV to add more premiums first to increase the subscriber base. Selfishly, since I subscribe to FIOS and have all the HD premiums, I want DirecTV to add AMC HD before anything else. But as a business decision, it would make more sense to add those HBO HD channels ASAP.

Promotional price however. It will change. That said, I agree with Rey, right now, that is a good deal

I get ALL HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, TMC, Starz, Encore, Flix, Sundance, IFC channels in existence, and as many as exist in HD for $30 a month for all of them with FIOS. $1 a day for way over 50 premiums is good in my book. DirecTV would gain more subscribers to those premiums if they would add more of them in HD.

BTW: I have alot of the premiums as a signup bonus, one being showtime for 15 months. I don't care nothing about them adding another channel that will show the same content I already get when they could add something like G4, AMC or the Travel Channel in HD and give me NEW content in HD.

What do you watch on AMC aside from the two original series? I want AMC HD for Breaking Bad. Do you actually want the channel for the commercial laced and cut movies or just the original programming?

damn straight. i've asked this at least a dozen times and no one ever answers it: WHY CAN'T DIRECTV BE THE HD PREMIUM LEADER?

I know why no one has given me a logical answer, there is none. There's plenty of bandwidth, there's plenty of demand, and there's plenty of money in it for them.

Far too many other avenues to watch/Rent Movies.

I hate to say it but you sound like a selfish person. Because you don't want the premiums, you would deprive that of other viewers.

I have all the premiums in HD with FIOS (so I am all set) but I also subscribe to DirecTV and feel that they owe it to the customers to add the HBO/Max HD multichannels as announced in the June 2007 press release. Before I subscribed to FIOS, I subscribed to DirecTV in good faith, thinking they would be adding more HBO and Max HD channels as announced. They never did. I'd be raising hell now if I hadn't got FIOS and got all the channels. It does boil down to a lie on the part of DirecTV. It is a big deception. Especially considering the fact that I paid $300 upfront for hardware (2 HD-DVRs) and got roped into a contract.

Agreed.

I was a premium Sub from from the Mid 90-s until the last couple of years.

I'd even go as far as saying while I would prefer any forthcoming Channel addittions to be Glorious HD that would not be true in case of Premium Movie Channels.

I'd take SD Channels before wanting any more resources used for Premium Movie Channels in HD.

Why are you so against the HD premiums?

you paid 300 bucks for DVR's? Mine was free, still haven't paid a dime for the rental fee since October either, or HD Access fee. I'd sue, they ripped you off, on top of breaking their promise.

Actually I don't really want the channel, I just want more premiums less.

Still just far too many other avenues to make those Channels being added in HD, worthwhile IMO.

Whatever series you are watching on the basic cable channels you desire in HD will eventually be on DVD. You have no argument.

I have discovered a TON of movies on the premium channels that I have stumbled across that I would have otherwise never seen. I have flipped and stopped on something I ended up loving, where as the description reads like something I would hate. I would never queue these same movies up in Netflix (not that I use Netflix), buy them on DVD or Bluray, or rent them because I don't like the description. I have found a ton of hidden gems on Cinemax especially. The premiums are fantastic and are meant to be in HD.

even though i don't sub to premiums anymore, i would never say don't add any HD premiums. i'm not the only customer D has. there are others that are very interested in having more HD premiums and it's because of this i really hope they do add more HD premiums. It can only be a good thing for Directv.More HD is always good!

i like your attitude. no reason why ALL customers can't be pleased, instead of just the sports fans

yes but isn't max HD only 3 channels right now? $12 is a lot IMO for 3 channels no?

There are 26 HBO/MAX channels in HD. DirecTV promised to carry 13 of them in a June 2007 press release. They carry only 4 as of April 2009. The point is that Tom would like to see them added to DirecTV and I agree.

Personally, it doesn't really matter to me because I get them all with FIOS, but DirecTV did promise more of them in HD. They lied. They still don't have them. They lied! Before FIOS, I signed onto DirecTV in good faith because all those HBO/MAX channels were coming in HD. I shelled out $300 for hardware and signed a 2 year contract. DirecTV didn't deliver. I now subscribe to both FIOS and DirecTV in order to get what I want.

They are not a waste of bandwidth at all. PPV is though.

ok skottey, you've said u got FiOs 10 times now, we get it. DirecTV lied abotu more HBO and MAX in HD 2 years ago, no ones disagreeing with u there. they did the same with the Comcast owned channels too. you're starting to sound like a broken record. if FiOs ever gets here I'll be very interested in gettin em. til then its pointless to keep talkin about em on a DirecTV board.
