Well after hearing alot of people saying "if you buy a X22 receiver from Ebay it is stolen, and the only reason they activate them is so they dont loose customers"", I emailed ceo@dishnetwork.com and asked them what they thought about someone buying a receiver off Ebay and here is there reply:

Mr. Higgins,
Let me try to clarify this for you. If a customer signed a lease with Dish Network and/or a Dish Network retailer, the equipment will always be considered leased equipment which belongs to Dish Network. Since that customer does not own the equipment, they do not have the right to sell it. On the other hand if a retailer goes out of business and sells off their stock, those receivers would be valid to activate on an account. A frontline customer service representative would not have the tools to activate such a receiver. The issue would need to be escalated to research the receiver before it would be activated.

Please contact me if you have further questions.

Then I emailed them back and asked specifically about them considering them stolen and this is the reply I got back:

Mr. Higgins,

We will never activate a receiver that has been reported to us as stolen. It's not really a matter of stolen or not stolen. If it is a leased receiver we will not activate it as a purchased receiver regardless of the price a person may pay on eBay. If you are thinking of purchasing a receiver on eBay and would like for me to check the status of the receiver, feel free to contact me. I will need the receiver number starting with R00....

Thank you,
Kristen

So I hope this clears up what E* thinks about buying a X22 receiver. :)

As a general rule you should always get the receiver and smartcard id's before you buy off ebay. Then call dish up to check the unit out before you buy it. If they say it's a good unit, get the persons name so you can try to get back to that same person once you have the box in your hands.

But as she said, not all 322's and 522's are leased. There are ways to get one that has never been activated to an account.. and they said they will activate those.

Good job on the clarification thiggin2, that should give some a glimmer of hope.

I have access to a hotline phone number I can call and ask if the rcvr is clear or not, should anyone need it. I won't give the number out, but I can check a rcvr for you.

So, in other words, since E* actually owns all leased receivers, if someone tries to sell a previously leased receiver, it is considered stolen.
That correct. Once it has been activated as a "lease" it is always a lease.

Thanks. This is one of those topics that has always got to me and I had to find out from the horse themselves. :)

The thing that scares me is that given E*s lousy support software, your legally purchased box might end up being considered leased and therefore E* property.

What is an x22 reciever? I never heard of them. Tried a search on ebay and all I could find is this:

Listing has picturesFrench Pure Hemp Dish Towel Circa 1900' Mono V

I got a chuckle out of it but haven't been able to learn anything about an X22 reciever.

There are 2 models that end with 22. The 322 and the 522. The 322 is a dual tuner receiver with outputs to two seperate TVs, and the 522 is the dual tuner PVR with two seperate outputs. The abbreviation of x22 is used to keep the typing to a minimum.

Another thing you might remember is that is correct, if you find a x22 on the account then yes it is probably leased. In the residential agreement there is a portion saying that if the equipment is not returned then the account/card would be charged in the amount corrosponding to the reciever. It's 200$ for the 322 and 300 for the 522, if those are paid then of course it really couldn't be leased since the reciever had abeen paid for. But as Kristen said its a case by case on if those are actually activated.

What I don't get is how retailers can sell their inventory off if these boxes are supossed to be used as leased. To me it would make sense that the retailer would send extra boxes back...

So what are you saying, the retailers actually have to pay for these leased receivers, and then dish pays them everytime one gets installed?

Yes and the retailer flips the bill for the shipping and gets charged back for the hardware in some cases when the system is shut off.

I work for Sears, and we sell Dish equipment.
I have a theory: Let's say I called the Dish retailer line and told them to send my Sears a 522 "for customer display use." When it came in, I could not put it out (we currently have a 508), but instead buy it from Sears for cheap (I bought my last LNB from work for $5 - we have TONS of Dish stuff opened, laying around). So then, I would outright own a 522, and could get it activated?
Anyone see any problems with that theory?

It would work. The key is to buy a never leased rcvr, and activate it through the ceo@echostar.com helpline. New and unopened is a sure fire way to make sure it is that way.

If anyone needs to have a 322/522 checked, PM me with the R00, I can verify it for you.

When E* charges the customer for the leased receiver that has not been returned, doesn't the customer then own the receiver and are free to sell it?
