They are some obscure math problem that the internet lemming will throw themselves at to try to collect them!

There are two kinds of points. You have trophy points which are just a fun way to keep track of achievements such as number of total posts, likes, and other things.
The other kind of points are "warning points". These are issued to naughty little boys and girls. Collect enough of these and you get a nice vacation from the site.
