Well, I cancelled Dish

If the Retailer is the one who set up the account, and if it is within 6 months from activation, the receivers are to be returned to the Retailer. If it is within 6 months and an account is canceled, the retailer gets charged back...but he can reuse the receivers. After 6 months, the customer is responsible for sending the receivers back. DISH tracks what receivers are associated with the original retailer, and a retailer cannot return any receiver for just any customer. They have to be his original customer, and it has to be within 6 months. Non-DVR receivers are re-deployed, and DVRs are sent in and DISH replaces them back to the retailer.

Doesn't the cable company also require you to return THEIR equipment when you leave? My recollection is you have to drop them off at a service location or office, so I don't really see this as a lot different.

cable company here comes to the house to get their equipment or we could havce dropped it off at their location

Yeah. A cable guy came by and picked up my receivers for free after I signed up for Dish. I really wish I never did sign up for Dish. I can't stand the fees, the picture quality, the HD RSN mess or the way they do their packages. These are things I did not know about before I signed the deal with them. Never again.

I recently deactivated 1 of my receivers...311. Dish didnt say anything abt sending the receiver back. I m not under contract anymore & still have 625.My question is if Dish didnt ask for the receiver back....can I give it away?. BTW I m in Puerto Rico

I returned 2 boxes to my cable company office. It took me five minutes to get there and it didn't cost me $30 for the privilege.

I understand that, however that is part of having satellite instead of cable. It's similar to if you have cable they don't charge you if you lose your signal or have a problem that requires them to come to your house, with Dish you have to pay or buy the monthly insurance. It's a different pricing model.

do you own the receiver? If so, then you are able to do with it as you please

NO, I am not under a commitment anymore. After I hung up with Dish I thought of something I should have asked. So I assume I use the labels provided, and take the boxes to ANY UPS store? Has anyone done this? And do I pay UPS $30, or does Dish bill me? I'm too disgusted to call Dish again. Thanks.

No one knows the answer to these questions? And yes, I do have the 2 original boxes. But I'm pretty sure the lady told me if I didn't use the shipping labels, I'd be billed $30. Anyone?

Ok here is something strange... forget about receiver. I recently talked to a rep. He told me that I have to pay for the satellite dish. As dish says that we can throw the satellite dish away and just move with the receiver, I threw it away when I recently moved. Now I am at an apartment where they have commercial account, so I need not pay for the dish. but he told me that when i move to a residential unit, i have to pay for the satellite dish... i told him that i never paid when i moved earlier. he told me that the terms have changed since Feb 2010. we have to pay for the satellite dish... it is $100.

Nope...I dont own the receiver. I got the receiver from the retailer who came to install it. After my 2 yr of contract expired...since I was hardly using that receiver anymore...I called Dish to take it out of my account. The guy coolly disabled that box...& asked...anything else. I said nope...& bye bye good night. Nothing abt returning the box or something like that as the OP stated for his boxes. the only thing different here are his boxes r VIP & mine is not.

Dish shoudl buy an airline, with all the extra fess I feel like this is nuts. Their new Duo fess are crazy. If I were not grandfathered into the old HD Only package I woudl be outta here in 2 seconds, but even with all the extra fess the low price of the old HD Only package keeps me around. I think in the long run Dish and Direct need to be careful and broadband speeds pick up more and more decent content is streamable. Hell NetFlix and my Roku are an unbeatbale combination, I almost feel guilty how much content I get from Netflix for so little cost! I easily see them doing a deal in the future to compete with Amazon where you'll be able to get very current content for marginal fee.

What new duo fees, like for the 222k receivers?

I've got a 222k, and it is $14 per month. It is my second reciever.
I love the way that they talked me into getting the duo reciever, and now I could use two 211's for the same monthly price. Then I could have HD on an extra T.V., and EHD use, which I was told would be available for the 222k, and even saw Charlie state that EHD was coming. I'm still waiting:mad:

Might as well have two 211 receivers and pay the $40 fee to get EHD to make each one a DVR than to have one 222 (if Dish Network will allow you to do that).

I think I will write my own "Terms" and send with my next payment that state an "Equipment Storage Fee" of $5 per receiver per day when service is terminated and that by depositing the attached payment Dish accepts the terms. Maybe I will even get it notarized.

Probably wouldn't do any good but it might make for an interesting discussion with a CSR when I cancel my account. :)

All I can really say is that customers complain, complain and complain and threaten to cancel if they don't get their way. Dish has no choice but to offer you discounts to stay, which takes away from their bottom line.

So when a customer really does cancel their service, why should Dish pay to ship their equipment back?

Customers can complain about the charge all day long, but I think as far as Dish is concerned the customer cancelled, and they can get away with it because there is nothing further that can be done to save the customer. If they are loosing the customers business for good, then why not pass the final shipping costs along to the customer?

I told a customer last week if they didn't want to pay for the shipping, then keep the service :)

The only thing Dish should do is allow customers to drop off equipment at DNS offices.

But it is a little sneaky that they put the label in the box to use, and then in the fine print on the paperwork they say there is a charge to use their label. When you look at it, $15 to use their labels are a bargain!

Claude, come on now. How would Dish know if they are "losing the customer's business for good"? I will definitely remember how I had to pay $30 to return their 2 receivers though.
