Why is that? That's something I used frequently on zooming SD channels that were broadcasting native 4:3. Taking that away - there must have been a reason?
All my TV's are 4K. My Hopper + is hooked up to a Sony X90J. The other units are hooked up to Series 6 TCL TV's.
HDR is always on with these Android Boxes. They do not support Dolby Vision.
Could you clarify how this thing is hooked up? You connect up the H+ directly to your TV. Does that connection also support video from the H3 as well, or is that a separate cable to the TV? I worry about a passthrough, a la the Logitech Revue which glitched every time it switched between itself and the passthrough.
It goes from USB from the Hopper 3 to the Hopper Plus then HDMI out to the TV.
Well, that's interesting. I presume you have to use the USB3 output of the Hopper?
Does use of the USB port downgrade the quality of the picture or is it equal to HDMI port quality or better? Seems like HDMI out to H+ would be better.
I am curious how having HDR always on would work with a 4K event that does not have HDR data.
I have a Sony XBR65X900E TV. When HDR mode is in Auto my TV only turns on HDR if the broadcast contains the HDR data. However under Picture Advanced settings Video options I can set HDR mode to Auto, HDR10, HLG, or Off. On a 4K recording that is not HDR if I change the HDR mode from Auto to HDR10 the colors get over saturated.
So I keep the HDR mode in Auto.
I can understand Dish not supporting Dolby Vision since it costs money to license Dolby Vision.
It does not seem to. Remember even though the HD channels are a few meg as far as data rate goes USB has plenty of bandwidth to spare.
But to my eyes the HD picture quality is the same.
This is hard to say without knowing exactly how it's supposed to look. With HDR is it too bright? Too dark? Are the colors off a little?
Dish does have much 4K so seeing the satellite signal and how it looks is hard.
However because it is an Android TV box you can watch 4K content from places like Netflix, Amazon, Disney + and many others. And the non HDR 4K I watched looked good to me and was acceptable but again I don't really know what it was supposed to look like. Could HDR being throwing things off that I am not noticing. Yes it could. But remember most Android TV boxes on the market that do 4K are stuck with the 4K on.
One more thing I want to stress talking about these DISH Android devices, and that is the software on them is pre release software. The bugs, features layouts that may be talked about or shown here may change when full production software is rolled out.
If you see anyone reporting issues or maybe features they are not liking or features that may not work or are currently missing do not assume this will be the case when the android products go into full release.
Those of us who have testing these things have been doing so for a long long time. I applaud DISH for adding some new eyes to this project. I know DISH wants this to be the best it can be when it's released.
This project is something those who want an all in one Dish / Streaming experience should be very excited about.
While I said I can't review this yet because it's not running production software, I think I can say that these boxes open up a new world of watching TV that I hope people will be excited about. I know it's changed the way my wife and kids are watching tv.
Currently if you watch a Dish 4K HDR event on channel 540-01 the Dish menus are very dark compared to the Dish menus on a non 4K HDR channel. How are the menus on the Hopper+? Are they the normal brightness?
From what I remember the menus did not turn dark like they did on the Hopper 3 alone.
However I can't test this as every time I tune to a 4K channel now I get a message my TV is not comparable with Dish's 4K. I am guessing this is a bug in the software as I could view them fine a few weeks ago.
It's not as dark as it is with a Hopper 3 and HDR on but it definitely is darker, DirecTV Stream (first attempt at turning Android TV into a TV box) had the same problem. Watching DirecTV Stream on a Roku compared to their box was a massive difference. They finally wised up and added a HDR on/off setting after receiving so many complaints about it. Hopefully Dish does the same at some point.
The DTV Stream box was worse then the Joey 4 but if you use a dongle to disable HDR on the Joey 4 there is definitely a improvement on non HDR content. (The dongle reports to the Joey 4 that the TV doesn't support HDR)
Like Scott said this is all still in beta, so I'm sure quite a few changes will be made between now and the final product.
Admittedly, I'm not familiar with DirectTV Stream. Out of curiosity, if it is an Android TV device similar to these new Dish Android boxes, does it also force SD viewing to be stretched, or does it allow the user to adjust the aspect ratio similar to what native Dish receivers allow?
There is no other box out there I know including the Directv Stream which streams the live video from your satellite receiver to the android box plus has Android TV apps.
So because of that the answer is no as no one else pulls everything from your satellite receiver.
This is a very important issue based on my experience.
I have a TV that supports HDR that I watch it a lot.
On that TV that supports HDR I mainly watch SDR.
In my experience turning HDR on on SDR programing does not result in good picture quality no matter how you adjust the picture on my TV.
I hope changes will be made so that HDR is able yo be turned off for SDR content because Joey 4 sounds interesting.
How and what dongle will disable HDR? I don't understand this.

I realize that you need the new Joey4 to access all of the Google Android streamed content from the Hopper+. But I wonder if you can still use a purchased Joey3 in addition to the new Joey4 to access Satellite content from the Hopper3 or do all of the Joeys have to be replaced with Joey4 clients.
I currently have 2 Hopper3 receivers and a Joey3 receiver. I would consider adding a Joey4 if it would allow 4K HDR content.
