I've had DirecTV for about a year. I have 2 HR21 receivers connected to 2 LG HDTVs. When viewing HD programming, everything looks OK at normal viewing distance, but when up close to the screen the picture, particularly the faces, looks very waxy. The simple solution is obvious, don't go that close. However, when I go to a TV showroom etc, the pictures all look great when viewed, even up close. Both the receivers and the TVs are set to display the picture "as transmitted". Am I expecting too much from my home sets, or is there some setting I'm overlooking?

Showroom is not home and in that what you have at home has compression issues for starters. Direct is known for over compressing and for what is called hdlite wich both affect the quality of what your viewing.
HD lite is not happening on MEG4 HD channels. I would look elsewhere than that old canned answer IMHO; lets start with the make & model of the TV(s), how they are setup, how they are connected, resolution settings and such. I do not experience these issues on any of my my displays with either the HD DVR or non-DVR HD.

Ive also seen the "waxy look" from improper tv settings. For instance, on the 08 Panasonic plasmas, if you use certain modes with whacked out gamma, they look waxy and noisy.
D*'s Mpeg4 stuff looks awesome on my tv, so I have to think its something else.
Is it on 720p or 1080i channels, or both?

how close is he getting to the screen? i mean if you're inches away from the screen even with a bluray you'll see imperfections. you're not suppose to be a foot or less from the screen. each tv's manual should indicate the minimum watching distance. my 1080p indicates a 6 foot minimum between you and the screen for the best picture.
Ive seen it with wrong settings on the tv, had nothing to do with D*. I did see more of what he's talking about with Dish though, I just think thats because they use a little more compression.
Well given that I got my direct service before it went to mpeg4 and havent seen any change in the quality of my hd image from mpeg2 to mpeg4 and going from an h21 to an h20 aswell as hdmi to components I wouldnt be surprised that the quality is not there for the op. At the moment Im finding more to not like my directv experience though its all on the audio end with various problems there.
you would be one of the few that didn't experience better quality pic with mpeg4. i and many others noticed the difference immediately. I also have E and if you're not happy with D i think you would be less happy with E which does a little more compressing. what is you're experience with bluray? are you experiencing any difficulties with this or is it just with satellite?
Don't mind Van he is just angry at the world. He would be the first to argue if the beautiful tan blond girl on the beach at 30 yards away was real or a cut-out.
Try Different picture modes and see if it makes a difference. Ie from TV.. Normal/Game/Cinema/Sports
Also do you have a Bluray or HD Up-convert DVD you can try with a new released movie and see if you get it over the same connection?
