That is where you are wrong... VOOM is a digital service, NO analog, they
deliver both SD and HD in digital format. That is why you can't scan for
your old analog stations

I just would like to make the point that with DirecTV I am able to
watch my local Ch's...not HD ...but analog locals. Voom is a digital
service that is trying to provide everything, including some of the
analog Ch's that people like. If they were just a digital service I
would agree that it would make no sense to pursue analog reception. But
when your service includes analog and digital Ch's in the same package,
it makes no sense provide a tuner that ignores analog signals. I have
an old DirecTV HD tuner that scans for digital as well as analog. Why
cant VOOM's receiver do the same? Its not that much of an investment.
It just seems silly to me that if I cant get NBC's digital signal that
i cant even attempt to scan for the analog sig of that same ch. This is
why I feel that VOOM is an add on service right now. I need all of my
locals ...digitally or through an analog signal.

Sorry...that compressed crap they and Directv is sending me is as good as anolog...but if you want to call it digital...ok. They are a digital service. They just have a ton of STD ch's. But how is it that I am able to scan for my anolog ch's with my 4 year old DTV HD receiver? I thought Directv was all digital too.

Vinny, you can still watch your analog locals with Voom too. That was my
point. Nothing stopping you from using your old antenna and running it to
your TV. If the antenna is delivering analog through your D* box(wasn't
aware this was possible), then it can also feed that signal right to your TV
without going through the Voom box.

Analog is being phased out. That's the reality. From a pure business
standpoint it makes no sense to invest any money in it if you're a startup.
Voom's long term viability is not assured at this time, IMO. Funneling
resources to a dying technology to appease a few is a sure way to tip the
scales in the favor of not making it.

Bottom line is they can't please everybody's needs. That doesn't mean your
needs aren't more important than the next guy's, but looking at the big
picture the lack of analog support makes sense.

That could be an install issue as much as anything else. Soooo many
variables on OTA stuff. You have to compare antenna locations, cable
used(RG6 or RG59?), length of cable run, etc. Some installs will need an
amp, some won't. Using an amp when you don't need one can be just as bad as
the inverse. I wouldn't pin it definitively on the boxes without first
carefully looking at everything.

I just moved into a new place a couple of months ago. Nice thing about new
construction is they wire things up decent and you can add additional
cabling as needed(which I did). Within the main wiring closet they install
an amplified CATV distribution block, by default. Well, since it's a new
development, there's new wire under the street and new wire all throughout
the house. Really no need for an amplified unit, which is not cheap btw,
because you don't have the signal loss. A simple non-amplified panel would
suffice. I had to learn this the hard way when my Comcast digital service
was giving me just horrible PQ. After a second service call when they
bypassed the amplified distribution panel, the PQ was nice and clean. Or as
good as it gets with cable ;-)

You guys do realize that clean analog, the kind you get with a good rooftop antenna, looks much better than anything you likely get on sat/cable that isn't hd? I've been tivo'ing the local analog nbc olympic feed. ch. 594 on voom looks like cr** in comparison. Too bad voom didn't include ntsc with their box, considering they have NO local at all. How much can an analog tuner cost?

If you subscribe to DirecTV local channels you are probably getting their feed not actually the OTA signal. I also have DirecTV in additional to VOOM and I get three channels for each local station. I get OTA analog from the antenna, DirecTV feed and HD-OTA from the antenna. You might not be receiving OTA at all on DirecTV.

Why would you care to watch the analog version of the channel when they are
required to broadcast the same stuff on the digital version? That makes no
sense at all. NBC pulled a real stunt with their BS on the Olympics. As a
result I refused to watch any of their coverage, analog, digital,
whatever... I am at no disadvantage by having a digital only OTA tuner. In
fact, I would say I'm at a significant advantage.

This one I agree with. Other than the opening ceremonies, I have watched
less than an hour of the oly's. I also thought I was still going to get
regular coverage of my local nbc station so I could watch the tonight show
and a couple other shows. Not. Because my local nbc station is not owned and
operated by NBC, I've only been able to watch oly's or nothing. I choose
nothing. NBC is by far the worst of the big 4 networks. I'm just glad Alias
is on ABC :)

I guess Im alone on this ...but thats what makes forums like these great. Differences in opinion. I think it really wont matter since I think VOOM will try and do what Directv is trying to right now with DTV adding HD local ch's to the biggest markets and then expanding. Voom is going to have alot of bandwidth space when they switch over to their new system.

I personally will be disappointed if VOOM wastes satellite bandwidth on
local channels. It starts out with 5-6 markets, and then suddenly 1 station
towns want theirs on the bird. Before you know it VOOM is launching
satellites just to carry locals.

And Don't forget the compression levels that usually come from carrying so
many channels. The locals OTA look FAR better.

Yes but how much space? With WM9 and the new bird I thought I read that Voom's potential to carry HD multiplied to like 90 HD channels. In that case HD network channels may not be a big deal, but to get everyone's locals would mean launching more Sats. Straight major network feed (meaning without local news and local commercials) would be the best, but I bet there are a zillion laws against it. I would RATHER see Voom try to tie down HDNet and inHD rather than locals. I think that's money BETTER spent in the present, and could lead to bigger short term gains than all the locals over Sat.

I would rather HDNET and INHD also...but VOOM doesnt have to provide every markets local ch's. They would start like Directv is starting ...with the biggest market. Dont get me wrong I would rather receive local ch's OTA.
 
Locals

New to VOOM (1 week) and from an area (Lehigh Valley, PA) that cannot receive local OTA channels. I believe these channels are more important for their content than picture clarity. Local news can affect those living in that area and should, in my opinion, be provided/offered over the satellite. I have Directv in a spare room for the football package and now VOOM in living room for HD. Adding cable for locals would be ridiculous and even more expensive. I guess we'll see what happens in the near future, but this lack of content is enough for me to make the switch again and I'm sure is keeping people from subscribing and causing cancellations (at least in my area). The HD pictures are awesome and seem much better than Directv. Aside from a few other minor complaints, I'll stick with VOOM for now. Thanks.
 
I live in Simi Valley which is outside of Los Angeles. I cannot get any local channels. I decided to stay with Voom anyway. I figure it will encourage me to watch less television. I hope they will have a solution in the future.
