VIP722 external USB drive

I am looking at possibly getting DISH Network and the VIP722. I see how it has a USB connection for an external drive. After some reading around this forum (& others), I had a question about this USB port.

Can a external USB drive be hooked up and increase the OVERALL storage of the DVR or is this USB strictly used for trasnferring items to/from the 722 DVR?

To/From. Recording only happens on the internal drive.

But you can watch an item that is on the external drive. I do it all the time with my ViP622.

Yup. Get an external drive - you'll be glad you did! Ours is a Seagate 750GB in a case with a fan - works great!
