Hi everyone.
I'm not to tech savy so it would help alot if we kept the terminology simple. LOL.

I just got dish network installed at the new place. Got the VIP722 dual tuner dvr unit installed across two rooms, then the vip211 installed in a spare room where the computer gear is hooked up.

Is there anyway to hook up my pc to this vip211 unit to have it act as a dvr??
The installer wasn't to sure about it himself and asked me to call customers service........

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

You can not go through your computer BUT you can hook up an external USB Hard Drive to the 211. Would require a one time $40.00 activation fee. Note: it would not be compatible with your 722.

If you have windows media center installed with a tv tuner and an IR blaster, you could hook it up to your receiver and use the PC as a dvr. You would need 2 tuner cards to use both tuners on your receiver, though. I doubt it's really worth it.

Not really. All that will do is allow analogue, real time recording and recording backups. Remember, Dish is Linux based.

Well then, yes, you can. Media center has a guide, you can set recordings, pause live tv, it's just like a TiVo. How is a media center pc with a tv tuner and ir blaster not a dvr?

ok so all I would really need is an external hard drive dedicated to the tuner and contact dish network for activation?? Seems simple enough.

So that's what you were trying to ask. Yes, just contact dish, pay the $40 fee and plug in an external drive.

second receiver
