VIP 722 HDMI connection issue

I have a Dish Network VIP 722 HD satellite receiver hooked upto a sony LCD HDTV with an HDMI -> DVI - > HDMI interface (the technitian used this interface at the time of installation instead of a regular HDMI cable for some reason). I have tried using just a plain HDMI cable to connect my TV and the satellite receiver but am unable to get any picture or sound. Does the VIP 722 HD receiver work only with the HDMI -> DVI -> HDMI interface or am I doing something wrong? Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated because I have pre-wired HDMI cables which I am not able to use at all. Thanks.
