I've done over a hundred and they have all defaulted to Dish's remote code IR 1. No trouble at all.
The only time I do an IR 'learn query' is when I want to set up a different Dish receiver in the same room (as when I had two 501s in my stereo rack) and I need to change the remote code of the Dish (and the Harmony, of course) to something other than "1. (I do this by taking the Green #1 Dish remote....setting it to, say, code #2...and then after a few commands while pointed at the harmony it says "Oh....I recognize this". Saves a bit of time but the database for anything other than code #1 is woefully incomplete.
I recommend the Dish DVR 942 because it has discrete Power On and Power Off in it's database. The 622 does not. (BTW...the 501 also has the discretes. I just say use the 942 because the 501 is so old now that I think some newer readers would scratch their heads).
BTW...if you want to change from the default Power Toggle, go to the software set up and click the Device Tab. Click 'Settings' in the Dish receiver block. Click 'Adjust power settings'. Click 'I want to turn off this device when it's not in use'. Click 'A button on the remote for On, and a different button for Off'. Check the 'I don't have the original remote, but I know the command that is used:' button and then choose 'Power On'. (It should be the first selection in the drop down box). Be sure to un-check the 'My device needs more than one command to turn it on and off' should it automatically fill in as it often does.
Click Next and do the same for the 'Which command will Power Off your device?' query.
Again....remember to un-check the 'My device needs more than one command to turn it on and off' (by going back and filling in the 'I don't have the original remote, but I know the command that is used:' button)
Why discrete ON / Offs? ...(well if you actually DO want to turn it On/Off), when a command gets blocked and you hit the 'HELP' button on the Harmony, it sends out all discrete commands at once (since they do no harm....unlike a toggle).
If the Dish receiver was Off...it will turn on then and you can simply press 'Yes...that fixed the problem', rather than having to go through a bunch of 'HELP' wizard questions before it finally gets around to the 'Is your PVR On? Yes/No...blah, blah, blah.
And as a final aside....if you really DO want to turn off your receiver, go back to the Activities Tab, click 'settings' on your Watch TV activity (whatever you named it). Select 'Review the settings for this Activity' then Next. Select 'Yes, but I want to add more control of options and devices for this Activity' then Next.
Continue going through the Wizard until you get to the 'Please review the actions for your Watch Television Activity:' page. Go down to the bottom section that says "When you leave this Activity, these devices are turned off and the following actions occur:' and change the drop down box in the 'Add Action for' to the Dish receiver. and after the 'when the Activity stops' on the same line, click 'Add' and select the button besides 'Send this infrared Command:' and set the command to 'View'. Continue on through the rest of the Wizard and update the remote.
The reason I say to do this is that since you may be 'paused up' when you hit the Off button on your Harmony, the dish receiver will say "You Must Go Live" but you will not see this prompt since the TV is off
.Having the Harmony send "View" before "Off" will avoid this.
