VDSL Network Sdn Bhd (VDSL) has teamed up with a US-based technology partner Cyjaya to provide very high-speed broadband access in the country and is working on a rollout plan for the service in the Klang Valley next year.
VDSL has obtained the network service provider (NSP), network facilities provider (NFP) and application service provider (ASP) licences from the Malaysia Communications & Multimedia Commission to provide giga broadband access services in the country.
“We are confident of helping the government achieve its vision of greater broadband access in the country,'' chief executive officer Maimunah Abu Bakar told StarBiz recently.
She said the current household penetration of broadband service in the country stood at only 3% compared with South Korea's 43% and Hong Kong's 36%.
In Malaysia, the main complaint is that there is very strong demand for broadband but supply is lagging. Another grouse is the transmission speed it is often based on “best effort'' and unsatisfactory.
The company has secured loans from local and foreign banks.
“For broadband to be successful, it has to start with cutting edge technology that is reliable, efficient, cost effective and most importantly, delivers at a very high speed.
“Based on theses factors, we are confident we have the right technology,'' she added.
VDSL, or very high bit rate digital subscriber line, provides an enormous amount of bandwidth, with speeds up to about 54 megabits per second (Mbps).
Maimunah said VDSL would build its own network infrastructure using VDSL-FSO (very high bit rate digital subscriber line - free space optics) technology.
The advantage of this technology is that the time needed to set up the network is much faster as it operates based on, among other things, ABLFSO (air blown lambda fibre space optic) technology for its backbone infrastructure and even in some cases, wireless broadband for last mile connectivity to the consumer.
The company installs switching equipment at various areas and connects them via a mesh ring to reduce line congestion, said Cyjaya chief executive officer and VDSL executive director, David Kim.
On pricing for the service, Maimunah said it is “affordable'' without elaborating.
She said the rates would be based on speed, which can range from 1Mbps to 54Mbps.
And companies that have large networks could also use the service for VoIP (voice over Internet protocol), as voice call charges are lower.
“When downloading a movie, you will be amazed at our speed compared with many in the market place,'' she said.
Although there are many ISP players, Maimunah believes that the “pie is big enough for everyone”, given the government's push or greater broadband access.
She believes VDSL complements the Streamyx and Jaring services in providing broadband access.
She said since the company was currently focusing on corporate clients, residential users would have to wait a little longer for the service to be launched.
