Using External Drive

I've noticed since I've hooked up an external drive my box is at 70 degrees, normally around 100.

Does the internal drive shut off when using an external or is the heat loss simply from the drive not accessing data.

My understanding is that the internal still spins, but of course there's no activity to that drive. Therefore, less power from the power supply.
