Can anybody tell me what the USB port is for?

That question has come up before, and the prevailing answer seems to be that nobody knows at this time.

My Guess

My guess is it may be used in the future for connecting a USB network adapter so you can get your updates via the internet , etc without the phone line. Sort of what TIVO did with their Home Media Option.

Yep, that or to allow the integration with the media server. There has been some hints that they might have a way to turn the current STBs into clients for the server.
