Satellite television broadcaster Dish Network Corp. will upgrade its systems in the early hours of Aug. 1, and become capable of transmitting the highest-resolution video available in the country.
Customers of the Englewood-based company who have its MPEG-4 or high-definition DVR set-top boxes will be able to order the video-on-demand movie “I Am Legend” in the 1080p resolution format.
It’s the same day the company adds 17 new high-definition channels and begins offering programming packages that include only HD channels.
Dish Network will reach its goal of offering 100 HD channels five months earlier than its original deadline and expects to reach 150 HD channels by year’s end.
However those channels are in a lesser resolution that the 1080p resolution, new-release movies that Dish Network will offer via video-on-demand.
The ultra-high definition is comparable to the image on a BluRay DVD, said Jessica Insalaco, Dish Network’s chief marketing officer.
“It’s an impressive television experience,” she said. “It’s beautiful.”
The company expects that channels will shift to the higher-resolution eventually. Dish Network decided to make its system capable of 1080p resolution transmissions as soon as movies started becoming available in the format.
“For us, it’s a way to get to the next generation of viewing,” Insalaco said
