I have a new receiver similar to Starsat SR-P250 CI. I need to update its software. I bought a serial-USB cable (twisted one). I installed Prolific driver on my pc. I wonder how can I check if the connection is working so I can upload the software. I tried but it is not working so i am trying to trace the problem.
Thanks,

The most likely issue is the cable. Some receivers require a "straight-thru" rs232 cable, and some require a "null modem" twisted cable , like the one you have. If you could get your hands on a "straight-thru" cable , to test it out, that would be quick and easy.
Another issue is that most of these recievers should be turned off at the rear switch when the download is started , and then quickly turned on to actually begin receiving. That can be something of a timing issue, and you may have to repeat it several times to get it .
Lastly, ( for me , at least) the usb-serial cables software implementation is frequently faulty. The best you can do there is make sure the COM port is set up correctly in the software driver, and hope the brand you bought is a good one. I've heard good things about the Belkin usb to serial cable, but I've never yet had to resort to such a thing. Good Luck.

The most common problem is not selecting the correct com port in the upgrade utility. It could be com5 or com6. Start at com1 and keep trying untill you find what it is set at. There should be a menu to set in the upgrade loader program. As suggested previously, one of the most common methods in upgrading receivers (do not know if this applies to your receiver) is to start the upgrade software, set the port in its configuration, select the file to load for the upgrade, start the upload then turn on the receiver. Most receivers will indicate the upgrade on the display. You will also see the transfer start on your computer screen. Once the trasnsfer has completed, DO NOT TOUCH YOUR COMPUTER OR RECEIVER YET, this just indicates that the software has been transfered to the receiver. It now has to flash (program) the firmware to the receiver. When completed it will reboot by itself.

Larry is right. That serial to usb adapter is probably using COM 4 or 5 or even 6 on your PC.

I actually made my own serial null cable out of cat5 cable, but it wouldn't work. Come to find out, I had my pins reversed...
