When I copy a widescreen image off my 622 to my dvd recorder and then attempt playback at 1080i on the HD-A1 the image is squeezed horizontally (black margins on the side and figures are skinny). If I view the image at 480p it is correctly proportional and fills the screen (HD 16:9 Widescreen CRT RS). I thought this is odd for a long time but figured it was just something I would have to live with as a byproduct of upconverting. It's only on images that I burn myself off the DVR. Standard DVD's upconvert just the way they should.
But this evening I hooked up my old OPPO upconverting dvd recorder via dvi (kept it around to view out of region) and was suprised to find that the upconverted image at 1080i displays the full image with correct proportions.
Has anyone else run into this replaying their own DVD recordings on the HD-A1? I'd like to know why my HD-A1 squeezes the image and the OPPO doesn't using similar settings. For upconverting regular DVDs the HD-A1 is much better than the OPPO. But I'm pleasantly surprised that the OPPO still has a use for me for playback of material I record. Better image quality than the HD-A1 at the 480p setting.
