Windows 7 runs just fine with 2GB of memory. Now if you were talking Vista, I would agree with you.

Agreed. I have Windows 7 running on 3 different computers with 2GB and no issues whatsoever.

heat, age, manufacturer defect, dropped during shipping, many things

it is a mechanical device that spins at high rpm (@7k)

then add the magnetic media, ect.

ive seen brand new ones go bad, and seen em last 5-10 years

most come with a 3 year warranty, some up to 5

thats a manufacturer warranty, so you would have to send it back to the hd maker

go out and download a later version of hirens boot disk. go to dos boot,hdd tools. There are a number of tools for chesking nearly all aspects of your computer. The download is free and the disk is an iso, bootable.
