unlock Philips DSX5500?

I have two Philips DSX5500 that I got from DirectTV about a year ago.
Unfortunately, I am no longer subscribed to DirectTV. Is there a way to unlock the satellite receiver / change its firmware to operate it as a "normal" satellite receiver and use it with other satellites?

I don't think it's illegal - I own the receivers.

Are you talking about using it as a Free to Air receiver? To my knowledge there is no way to do this. If you are talking about using it to receive free D* programming that type of discussion is not allowed here.

Again: I'm not planning to do anything illegal.
