unbelievably bad customer service - even by Dish standards

He didn't actually say that, if you'll look closely. He says he SUSPECTS that it can get it's guide information one of two ways. Satellite or ethernet.

Just changing the emphasis on that sentence... I am actually looking for the original information I had when I first started because I believe I have something that confirms this, but then again I will still concede to coincidence.

I did read too much into that, I stand corrected if you are saying one of two ways! While I never heard or saw anything that added the ability to get guide downloads from the internet, I would guess it is not impossible....

Its really pure speculation at this point, haha. I am "experimenting" with my home gear and looking into some information DISH supplied to me when I first started here years ago. So much has changed that finding old information cannot happen via our web service, I have to find it on a printed paper that I have kept since being a new hire (I keep forgetting to look, honestly).
