Turbo HD---feel a little misled

Hi everyone,

First post. Just signed up with Dish yesterday with an installation of a 722 and a 612.

I decided on Dish because I wanted better picture quality than TWC and I wanted to simplify my television viewing experience. By that I mean that I wanted fewer channels that I actually watch...and I wanted them to be all HD. Maybe I missed something, but the TV ads for Turbo HD and their website say 100% HD. Well, that's not true. I now have a plethora of non HD channels that I have to wade through to find the HD channels that are scattered throughout the channel guide. Why do I need a non-HD version of my HD channels? Why all the extra channels I don't want and didn't subscribe to? Why do I have to have the HSN on my guide? I really just wanted the Turbo Gold channels.

I called Dish and they said you get those "extra channels" no matter what. Sure wasn't advertised that way.

Any ideas as to why they would advertise 100% HD and then provide something different?

Yeah...the CSR told me that too. The problem with that is that not all my locals are in HD so they fall off of the guide.

I just finished programming a favorites channel with just the Turbo Gold channels and my local non-HD channels.

Guess my question is...why advertise 100% HD and then provide a lot of non-HD channels?

Block those channels and set your DVR to hide channels that are blocked.

I do it for adult, duplicates, shopping, and foreign language channels. Probably added years to buttons on my remote.

Yeah I just finished setting up favorites to get rid of the dupes. But then I went back and made a list of my channels using the "Add Sub" in the guide and then bounced it against my Fav list to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Not to thread crap, but...

Dish has its share of problems, but giving the customer SD channels in addition to HD channels is NOT one of them. I would think most customers still have atleast one NON-HD TV in the house (i.e. kitchen/kids room) that would need SD channels. I have alot of favorite shows that are not broadcast on any HD channel.. As stated above it easy to just make your favorites reflect, well your favorites..

Yeah, its pretty simple..DISH has like 500 channels (or so) and all they do when you sign up for different packages is enable a subset. You can block the ones you don't want but I think its kind of nice to see the 'universe' of channels that are out there if I want.

I was told by CS that they will not do TurboHD only (with no AT package) if there are any non-HD receivers on the account. Is this true? If so, wouldn't it make it pointless to have the SD versions the original poster is talking about?

Lets say you have a 622 and a 211.. then lets say the the TV2 out on the 622 goes to 1 or more SD televisions. I have the absolute pack with that configuration. I have 2 HD tv's, one on the 622 and one on the 211. The TV2 out on the 622 goes to the other 2 TV's. The SD channels are handy on the other TV's and I only have HD receivers.

It doesn't matter a lot since the HD versions are fit to the screen. They are slightly squished so I still prefer the SD channel when watching the SD TVs. But people will complain about anything. If they were not there people would complain too. I think the OP best solution would be to solve the "problem" with a new HD Favorites list.

I dont think he is complaining so much about the sd channels as he is about Dish saying the turbo packs are 100% hd. That is wrong. I think he is more mad about the false advertising. If they want to include all of the other sd stuff, that is fine, just dont say it is 100% hd. It isnt.

Unbelievable. You people show why companies cannot rely just on what consumers want when they get complaints. Are you actually saying, the fact that Dish has a 100% HD package, and has additionally given to you free the SD channels is bad? Or constitutes false advertising? Really? Really?

You are misled because you get MORE than you thought?

LOL, I was thinking the same thing.

Wow...my first post and I'm accused of being a "complainer about everything". Maybe some of you should wait until I have some more posts before making a such a judgmental statement.

Let me clarify...the tv ads and the dish network website say that Turbo HD is a 100% HD service. Either it is or it isn't...and it isn't. Why advertise 100% HD when it's not? I just started a business relationship with Dish and I find out what I got wasn't as advertised.

It isn't a benefit to get something you don't want. If you don't like french fries and you get a bag full of fries when you buy your burger, and all you asked for and all you ordered was a burger, it isn't a benefit.

As I said, I switched because I wanted an uncomplicated channel guide and only HD service. I only have HD sets in the house and I have no need for nor do I want the SD channels. And it's not just SD versions of the HD channels, they've thrown in a lot of other channels also (ie the Home Shopping Network).

I also stated that I found a solution to the problem. I appreciate the posters that understood that it wasn't that there wasn't a solution, it was...as the original post stated...that I felt a little misled. Maybe I just haven't drank the kool-aid yet. :)

IF you signed up for one of the Turbo HD packages, then what you are paying for is HD. All the rest that is thrown in on top of that is freebies.

Just press your guide button until the menu says ALL HD and then you will not see all the add-on stuff they throw in with your HD package.

Not every channel is available in HD yet to any provider and the ones that are don't always show HD content.

Many of those SD channels (such as the shopping channels) pay Dish to be included in the channel package. By including them in the TurboHD packages, they are actually keeping your bill lower. Some of the other channels are public service channels

The SD channels are worth having for when recording programs not available in HD because they take up much less disk space than recording the HD channel.

Most people would be happy to get fries for free but if they didn't like fries they can toss them in the trash or just hide them in their guide.

You gotta be careful with those first posts, they can be a killer.;)

Why?

I understand your feeling jibbed for not getting 100% HD, but you your self stated that some of your locals are not HD. Since your complaining about not getting 100% HD, then why are you adding your non HD locals to your HD line up?

If dish was giving you only 100% HD and you found out some of your locals are not HD, and not included as a SD channel to your local channels. I bet you would complain that not all your locals was available to you since you PAY for locals.

Cable companies do the same thing. They say you get all channels for your entertainment, but they add QVC and alot of other channels. I do not want. How is QVC entertaining? I feel Jibbed for what cable companies promise soo should I complain too? They say they have 500 hours of HD versus 75 hrs from Sat Companies. Their lying and using false advertisment to get me to go back to comcast, but I am informed enough to realize their just trying to sell me something.

Welcome to the forums and have a nice day!!
