I want to get TSN because their hockey coverage is way better then anything in the US but I cant get it through cable. I know that I will need a 30in dish a and a receiver but I'm not sure what after that. Like what type of receiver do I need, do I need to do anything special to the receiver once I get. I looked around on the forum and couldn't seem to find any of that info, or I did and it didn't exactly register with me.

Also I feel like the answer to this question is no but I'm going to ask anyways:
When I'm at school next year in Boston in an apartment style dorm building and I want Canadian channels even more because my school is cheap and doesn't have NBCsports could I set up an dish on a stand pointing out the window (yes there is a good line of site) or would doing this give me like cancer or something?

From that location Bell Satellite Subscription service should come in fine. I had to use a larger dish in Indianapolis but you should be far enough North a D500 dish would work fine. You will need a clear los to the south (mine is pointed almost due South).

just to clarify, your question implies that you may be looking for unscrambled feeds of TSN. that is not possible. however a subscription to bell as suggested by bigrich is one option to receive tsn. another option is to subscribe to shaw direct. not sure how well either would work with an indoor satellite dish pointed out a window.

So if I were to sign up for service through a Canadian friends house but then bring the dish and receiver back to NH back home with me then it would work? Also what if I open the window and have pretty good elevation? And so trying it anyway wont give me cancer?

Since I had both services either is good. And I'm assuming(don't live in the US)that BTV is receive able in your both location.

The only thing with BTV is the phone line. They tend to call(and its happened to me and I lve in Canada!!!)if you don't plug it into the phone line as they want to know your location(ID Adress(receiver), so if you go BTV(Bell) NEVER PLUG IT INTO THE PHONE LINE!! If I where you I would go with SD(Shaw Direct) as they don't really care if the phone line is pluged in or not and SD is good throught out the US unlike vBTV.

As for get a sub thats a different story. I'm not sur how your going to do it but I know alot of memebers here use a "broker" but since your going to use a "friends" address the bill will being going there and they may want a phone number. So beware.

In anycase you can't just sub to TSN, you MUST take a basic package. I'm not sure if you can add TSN (with basic)by itself or not or if you have to take it in a Sports package(haven't had SD for 5 years) so I'm not sure how it is now.In anycase I wish you luck.

As for the technical part not sure, but do you want to open the window in winter? I'm not sure how cold Boston gets in the winter so I can't really answer that part.

Hey I don't pay the heating bill. Also my school sucks so badly at its climate control that I already open the window.

Hrmmm strange...
Not to thread-jack.. but I've been a subscriber to BellTV since 1995, and not ONCE have they ever called me to ask me about my receiver ID or location. I haven't had any of my receivers plugged in since 2001. Odd that some of you are claiming to get calls from Bell asking about receiver location.

I thought Bell ExpressVu launched in 1997?
