Something like that,
Go get the ap working so you see through your phone lens. Then you point the phone in the direction of the compass line (azimuth) and height (elevation) of the 101 sat. You will see the identification for the sats. The idea is that if you see the sats but there are obstructions you have to move to a better location so when you install th mast and dish you will not be trying to receive signal through a tree or house.
You can get the az & el for your zip code on the Directv site.

Now I'm getting no SWM detected. What does that mean? I'm using a box that says satellite in swm-1. I'm assuming that means I have an SWM? Do I need to select multiswitch instead? I think I've got the satellite pointed in the right direct according to the zip code I entered. I also know my dish is a slimline 5(or I think it is according to pictures). I see 18 dish options and about 5 were slimline 5 options. Which one do I choose?
You don't have a swm unless you have a swm8/16 multiswitch. The dish selection should be slimline5 non swm or something like that. What choices does it give you?
The swm1 input is where you would connect the dish if you were using a swm setup. You need to connect two cables from the dish for your dvr to work normally. You also need to connect a bbc in line with each cable. There is no such thing as a bbc tuner. Have you considered having Directv do this for you?
Im not using an Swm setup or a DVr Is this dish made only for a DVr? What is bbc in line? Do I need one of these for just a receiver and not a DVr?
Sorry, I thought you had a dvr. That means there is only one input from the dish, but you do need a bbc inline since you don't have a swm setup. When I said bbc in line, I meant you have to connect a bbc to the cable that comes from the dish to the back of the receiver. It needs to go close to the receiver. Again, have you considered having Directv do this for you?
I'm trying to set this up at a vacation home and I don't feel like doubling my monthly bill so I'd prefer to do it on my own. So I just connect this bbc thing to the coax coming from the dish? Do I need one for each tv? Would it show all zeros if I don't have this as far as signal strength goes?
It connects at the back of the receiver. Each receiver needs one. It would show zeros without it. You can get one from Directv. Here's a question for you. Where did you get this receiver that you are trying to set up?
The receiver I'm using is my friends. I just want to see if I can get it to work. Then I'll order an extra receiver with a card. I just want to make sure I can get it to work first. Is that bbc converter available anywhere else online other than directv?
Sounds a little sketchy. Not saying it won't work, but unless the receiver is activated on your friend's account (and not just something he had in his basement), I don't see it happening. Obviously, D* is not keen on people splitting their service between multiple addresses.
