Tried to upgrade to Joey 4k but...

Today I spoke to Dish thru their support chat and went about wanting to do the following - return 2 joeys no longer user and replace one joey with a 4k model. The chat rep was polite and listened, he offered to waive upgrade/install fees if I signed up for dish protect for 3months free, so far all is good. Then came the you will be locked into a 24month agreement clause, I politely said I would not want that, he checked and said because of the upgrade to the 4k joey and waiving of costs of said 4k joey that it was part of the deal. I politely refused and just went with returning my 2 no longer needed Joeys.

I know dish is not offering a lot of 4k content yet but thought since I had a 4k tv it would be good to upgrade but I don't want to lock myself into 2 year contract especially after the past few months where I'm barely watching Dish for anything but background noise. I actually have been thinking of cutting the cord as they say but still like my Dish equipment and hopefully new content and sports will resume sometime soon. Now if dish said 6 or 12 months I probably would of said ok to it but locking in just wasn't in the cards.

The customer service person was fine to work with but I really think Dish might want to think of changing their policies about long commitments for a swap/upgrade of an auxiliary receiver in light of all the other options customers now have.

In recently canceled a 4k Joey "upgrade" after weighing up the 2 year commitment cost vs what I actually get via the Joey.

The only 4k content is select on demand movies and there is some 4k content on Netflix. I have heard Amazon Prime will not run on any Joey so I am assuming that content is also not on the 4k Joey.

And I have heard via this forum that it does not process HDR. If this is incorrect I will edit this out, however, please direct us to the specs that say it is.

Yeah a 2 year commit isn't in the cards for me right now also it seems like most services are going to apps any ways and letting the TV or streaming hardware do the work.

Recently (like two weeks ago) I had a chat about adding a Joey. Long story short, 50 dollar lease, 100 dollar service call, but 10 dollar service call if I let them sell my private info to protect plan admins. Oh, and 24 month lease. Plus seven bucks a month.

Well, selling my info isn't cool so...150 dollars and two year jail time. Buy wireless joey and access point from Amazon, 150 dollars and no jail term.

It was a very easy decision.

I recommend buying the 4K Joey probably offsite if you can save money on the cost - and activating it through Dish. No contract and you can deactivate and reactivate at will with no cost, should that situation arise. Then you just have the standard $7.00 per month.

Good idea! It's been so long since I bought equipment outside of Dish forgot about that avenue. I'll keep an eye out for a good deal because currently don't see a must have for a Dish 4k joey even though the TV is 4k.

Probably joey3 is better choice than joey 4k...

The joey 3 is the newer version,
Even though it is not 4k,
Is is faster than the J4k.

The J4k does not and can not process HDR,
Hardware limitations,
So it is pretty much useless for 4k.

So until Dish makes a HDR Joey,
The J3 is the way to go.
