Just out of curiosity, just what does one have to pay nowadays to lease a transponder for a 24 hour SD broadcast?

Usually a full transponder is not used for occasional use SD events.

More typical would be a 2.5 meg occasional use playout or turn on a MCPC (mux) for 24 hours $500 - $700 on G19 Ku.

Less popular satellite $300 - $500 for playout or a turn.

SCPC will be more and you will need to also budget an uplink facility or truck.

Sorry, I didn't word my question correctly. I was curious to know what a full time SD TV Station would expect to pay to lease a transponder (monthly)?

As everything is pretty much multiplexed digital, you'd have to teleport in to an uplink service. Can't help you with the cost question.

I remember looking for this info myself maybe a year ago and the best price I could find was $5000 a month on a less than optimal satellite. What I understand now is that the advertised price probably didn't include any uplink services and required some kind of extended contract.

So be prepared to pay what SatelliteAV quoted above if you want to be on the most popular FTA satellite. There are a few companies who jam a lot of channels onto one transponder so if you can accept a lower quality picture I'll bet they will give you a deal below $15000.
