Howdy!

My Mom has been through 6 Vip722k receivers? (Sorry if my terminology is off). and is just about pulling her hair out everytime she loses all of her favorite programs on a regular basis. What's involved in pulling the data off of one of these? Just buy a USB HD and then what?

Sorry, I won't have a chance to play with her system until I go over there to back her data up and want to make sure I know what to do and have the appropriate resources. I'm an IT professional so I'm good with technical stuff for the most part lol. Thanks in advance for any help!

Buy a USB HDD that meets the requirement, pay $39.99 to Dish to activate the feature, connect up the HDD, and copy stuff off to the HDD.

I would also be looking for household power problems (or something). Maybe power surges/spikes, or grounding problems, or something else. That's (six) a lot of bad luck on receivers.

Exactly. I don't know how D Network has just blindly given her that many receivers lol. I'm hooking her new one up to a UPS when it arrives though to hopefully sort out possible power issues.

Cold Irons is right....there is something else going on there they needs to be addressed.

If its dirty/fluctuating power and or heat...it WILL also affect the life of any external HDD you buy as well.

Yes, make sure it's getting air circulation...nothing sitting on top of it, or vice verse. Not in enclosed glass front cabinet, etc.

I know you new to here D* stands for Directv & E* is for Dish network (Echostar). If she has gone thru 6 there are some electrical issues going on to take out that many of the VIP 722k's. Need to go in and check the house wiring. If it is an older house then the wiring could be reverse polarity and the ground is really supplying a hot wire to the unit as well. Take an electrical tester and plug into wall to show if wiring is wrong. UPS won't help if the house wiring is the problem.
