First I want to introduce myself as being new to this forum but a Directv user since December 1994. I have a TIVO HD-DVR receiver from before the lease days that has died. On the hard drive are many recordings that I want to transfer to my new receiver (hr23). Is there any way of removing the hard drive from the dead receiver and transferring the programs to one of my other receivers? Thanks for any help with this.

No you can not move the drive to another unit. A different unit will not see it untill you reformat it in hte new system and thus loose everything that is on it. So if the unit is dead you can not get the programs off it.

From what I've read, most times when a Tivo unit dies, it is actually a hard drive failure. Many are reporting success by replacing the hard drive. I've never tried it, but some have reported that they have been successful in cloning the older drive to a newer drive, therefore saving shows on the old drive. For more info, try TiVo Community .

But ClemSole is right, there is no way to transfer the recorded shows to a newer DirecTV DVR.

Thanks for the information.

I don't think it was a hard drive issue as the unit "said" it was shutting down due to excessive heat to prevent further damage. Unplugged a few times and the notice kept reappearing.
