I want to transfer HD recordings from vip722 to PC so that I cam make hd video collection...

is this possible? if yes how?

If not I am thinking of buying a HDTV PC tuner so that I can reocord on PC and create video collection later...do you think any issue in this approach?

Thanks in advance!!

Prakash

The cheapest thing is the Hauppauge 1212. You can't use an cheap ATSC tuner because the DVR doesn't output ATSC.

hmm so one thing is getting confirm...its not possible to have HD recording move to PC without a HD card....

so next option, buying a hdtv tuner like "ATI Theater HD 750" and connect vip722 to this card (hoping there's a connector like hdmi on such card) and record the shows live....or infact do the hd recording first on 722 and then play that on TV tuner and record then?

anybody tried any such approach?

Not gonna work

That is still a HDTV tuner card and the VIP series DOES NOT output an ATSC or clear QAM TV signal. The USB output is highly encrypted and the HDMI is set with DRM so you can't record from it. The only way to get the HD out that is recordable is by using component. I don't think that there are any cards that will input that signal for a reasonable price.

Yeah didn't realise the inputs issue...anyway i ordered Hauppauge 1212....

i use a stand alone dvd recorder for this and works fine, but records in digital only. i guess u could get a hd rcorder not sure

Dish dvr recordings are encrypted, you can transfer them and burn a dvd but they will not play.
I thought that I read the recordings on the internal drive were not encrypted, but that any recordings transferred to an external drive (if you paid DISH to have that feature enabled) are encrypted.

Does anyone know...is the internal drive an IDE or ATA drive?

This is correct, except for HBO (and a handful of other channels?) which are also encrypted on the internal disk.

I believe the VIP series of receivers have SATA disks, while earlier SD DVRs had IDE drives. I know for a fact that 501's and 625's both use IDE disks.

The HDD in VIP's are SATA. The internal HDD isn't encrypted but is MPEG 4. Anything transferred to ext is encrypted and will stay that way if sent back the the internal.

The Intensity Pro card from BlackMagic Design has dropped from $350 to $200 recently. They have analog HD component inputs as well as HDMI. You can record uncompressed HD if your computer is fast enough and your storage space huge enough, but it also includes a MJPEG codec.

Also, there is the Matrox MXO2 Mini, which just came out for $450. Does the same thing, but more advanced and includes a better codec that is MPEG-2 based.
