DVD got bad reviews when it first came out, and I have an early $1k DVD player still and some of the old disks. The initial compression was horrible and it was panned next to the higher quality of LaserDisc. Of course it did not take too long before the player dropped in price and the MPEG-2 encoders were improved to quickly pass the LaserDisc in PQ.
