FOX Sports on MSN - MLB - Torre turns down offer from Yankees

Best of luck to Joe. As much as I hate the Yankees, I've always felt Joe is one of the classiest men in baseball. Steinbrenner deserves whatever fate his next manager brings. Hopefully, Joe lands somewhere that wins him a World Series without a cast of multi-million dollar players.

It's also great to see that this was Joe's decision, not George's.

I applud Joe for making this decission.

I am a Red Sox fan but felt sorry for the treatment he got at the end of the season.

Joe Torre took a team that was doing terrible the first half of the season and got them to the playoffs.

At the end of the last game I think I actually applauded Joe the last time they showed him on TV. He might have been a Yankee, but he was also a class act.

The question is, Do you believe all of this? Was this just a ploy for Steinbrenner to save face and win back the fans? In any case George had to know that after all of this Joe was going to tell him to shove it.

i think a fair amount of players will jump ship. A-Rod, the cubbies are waiting dude!!

as for joe, classy move on his part. but i would expect nothing less.

Possibly A-Rod as much as the Yankees need him when the new stadium opens (at least thats been the story lately)
and Mariano.
Both would look good in Tigers uniforms.

Good for Joe, as long as he was not forced out, which we will never know for sure.

Jimbo

I would say goodbye to Torres. Here in NYC it was felt that it was too long already with Joe as a manager. He had his run and it had run its course. Goodbye and let's welcome the next guy. Good luck to him if he wins 25 WS from now on. But he never won one outside the Yankees... Goodbye it was a good ride while it lasted.

Anyone who would like to jump on A-Rod for 10 years 300 million is welcome to have him. Yankees already said that if he opts out he is out. I will say to A-Rod goodbye as well if he does opt out and go to another sucker (aka Hicks) who would give you that type of money. Rather spend that money in free agency and the development of young prospects.

As to Mariano... It has been a good ride but his stuff is not what it used to be. Every good story has its ending... and the end is near... you can hear the rain drops falling.

I have a different spin, so to speak. He came on TV and basically said that 'he will do anything' and that 'all I want to do is be a Yankee'. The contract was full attainable incentives where he would reach 8 million a year. Did you HONESTLY expect him to get a raise? How sincere was Joe when he said he 'would do anything to stay a Yankee'?? Or did it REALLY mean 'I will do anything to be a Yankee IF you give me the money I want'? I think his agent was whispering that he can get a multi-year contract in the 8, 9 or 10 million from somewhere else....and quite honestly...I don't think that is going to happen. And besides, the manager of a baseball team has THE LEAST amount of impact of whether a team wins or loses of ANY coach/manager of ANY of the major sports....ESPECIALLY the American League manager with that communist rule of the DH.

And Mariano Rivera....and his little declaration of 'if Joe aint' back, I am gone....'?! Riiiiiggghhhttt....wiggle a couple million more in his face, and I am sure he will stick around.

The Yankees are going to be dismantled. I love it !!!! :haha :haha

Arod...gone
Mariano... no more closer...gone
Petit ... gone
Posada... gone
Giambi... gone
Jeter will be left to play with himself.. LMAO

Then George will turn over the team to his flunkie who has never coached!! Mattingly!!!

hmmm... Petit and Arod would make nice additions to the Red SOX.....

Petit...has been...
Giambi...another has been....
Posada will FLOURISH as the BEST catch in the lague with a REAL pitching staf....
A-ROD....a Tiger or a Cub....
And mark my words....IF Posada leave.....Mariano WILL be on the same team...

And I like Mattingly, but you are right Vurbano....you have a BETTER manager in Gurardi...but they will not give him the job.....

Goodbye and let's welcome the next guy.

Remains to be seen if the next guy can take the team to the Post Season every year they manage with 6 WS appearances and 4 titles. If those 4 titles had been spread out a little better, Torre would probably still be manager.

Yeah, he was helped out by young talent, smart free agent moves, and huge resources, but any winning manager has some combination of those. The Yankee fans who want to shrug this off have no appreciation of Torre's accomplishments. Plus, as has been mentioned, he brought class to the organization.

I sure do hope A-Rod opts out. It sure would help my Rangers get rid of the stupid mistake of his contract.

I side with Joe on this one. He did so much to help those lousy egotistical morons and look how he was treated.

I look for Torre to take a year off then come back, unless the Cardinals job opens up.

I would expect the same....the question is, LaRussa said that if Walt Jockety(sp?) was not there, he was gone....will he follow through...? IF he does leave, look for LaRussa going to the Pirates and Torre going to St. Louis...the latter being a no-brainer IMHO....
