To hws being replaced with 1 H3 and a Joey

As above, I have an hh3 scheduled to be installed to replace my two hws. I would like to transfer all the recordings and timers. When I go to manage my recordings not all are there so I was planning on using ethernet rather than via hard drive. Is it possible to transfer all the recordings and timers from both HWS into 1 H3?

Not really. The ethernet transfer time is a little longer but it moves the PTAT recordings too. The ethernet transfer is also a lot less of a paint in the ___.

I don't think that method will transfer your timers, though.

I went from 2 H2 to 1 H3 and was only able to transfer 1 set of timers by backing them up to the remote, the rest I had to re-enter manually but I was prepared to do that so not a problem./.

Is the combined amount of recordings on both your HWS's MORE than can fit on a single H3 HDD of 2TB? If you are both over 50% on your HWS's, then you will have to leave some recordings behind, unless you want to transfer the overfill onto an external HDD.

Also, unless they are shipping the H3 to you ahead of the install day, you most likely won't have time to perform the RJ45 port transfer--of TWO boxes--because the installers take the boxes when they finish the install. Or the installer is ready to connect your new H3, but you are still transferring and now the tech is being inconvenienced, and if he's a contractor, he is really gonna be unhappy because he either has a next install to get to or he just wants to go home at the end of a long day, even if you arrange to pay the shipping charges and send the old boxes to Dish within the grace period.

FWIW, I would only do RJ45 transfer if the H3 is a replacement RMA that already has a pre-paid postage from Dish. This gives me hours (or days) to do the transfer. However, using the external HDD for archive/backup is really the preferred way for me because I can still keep the recordings that aren't going to fit on the internal anyway. For upgrades, I've always transferred to HDD, and then transferred the recordings from HDD to the new box via USB. Works very well.

Sounds great. I'm happy that you thought this ahead of time. As for not seeing all your recordings for HDD transfer: are you using Folders on your DVR's? If you are, maybe the HWS has been updated to work like the H3 in that if you do use folders, you have to go into the folders and select what you want for transfer. Just a few hours ago, I freaked out because when I initiated a transfer, only SOME of my recordings showed up. Then I remembered I have to go into each folder, and then select the recordings for transfer. I think the "Select All" selects everything on the DVR.

Yes, the HWS and H3 both have the same HDD capacity of 2TB. So, if you have your HWS's with a combined used space LESS than 100%, they you are good to go, but if you HWS's combined space used is OVER 100%, then some programming is going to have to be left behind unless you off load the overage on an external HDD.

Please let us all know how it turns out. I am curious to know what Dish end up doing.

Well the tech came out with the H3 and Joey 2 last Sunday. Install went well. I had one 40.0 remote and backed up the Hopper with the most timers (HWS1) and restored it to the new H3. Took a few tries but finally worked Then I backed up the other old HWS (HWS2) and restored that. It overwrote the HWS1 timers (which I expected), so I restored the HWS1 again so I would not have to manually recreate as many timers.

I did an ethernet restore of HWS1 which I thought went well, but it didn't. I had 99 recording and at the end it told me 79 of 99 transferred. What about the other 20? There were none left on the old HWS1. On the new H3, there are some shows that say there are multiple episodes, but not all are there. Poof, gone.

To add insult to injury, the HWS2 crapped out and had a hard drive failure before I transferred anything. It shows the HD is 100% full and does not list any shows. Diagnostics shows HD failure. Same thing happened once before about 6 months ago, then it worked perfectly. In hindsight I should have replaced it then. Oh well, live and learn.

I will say I liked having 2 hoppers better than a hopper and joey. I mostly used one and my wife the other. Now we use folders, not as nice.
