Tivo UI

Apparently the newest update reassigned memory and the H 1's are supposedly faster. I haven't installed any in a while, so not sure if that's true or not

The two H1's that a couple of friends had have been upgraded to H3's now, so I can't check that out. Maybe someone with better H1 access will drop in and let us know how well it worked.

I think I should have said Tivo OS instead of Tivo UI. The main benefit being functionality rather than appearance. Stuff like not skipping recordings or deleting timers at random.
Anyway, I'll leave it for others to debate. I usually enjoy forums like this but this one isn't fun for me anymore so this will be my last post here.
To everyone who has helped me, thank you, keep doing what you do and take care. :heartbeat:biggrin

Don't let the haters get to you. I personally think your question was a valid one to ask. That said, Tivos do miss recordings. One of the reasons I left Tivo was the terrible Rovi guide data. Things still are not as good as they were with Tribune data, but they are probably similar to what we have with Dish. The disappearing timers sounds like database corruption to me, which could happen just as easily with Tivo OS.

As an owner of three different series of TiVo and a frequent viewer and participant of the TiVo Community forums, I can tell you that TiVo and its latest Hydra is just as controversial with a lot of haters and some likers. And let's also add that DirecTV's latest UI update is also just as controversial as tivo's Hydra and Hoppers carbon UI with a lot of haters there DirecTV as well. It is so unfortunate that dish DirecTV and TiVo are all in the same quicksand when it comes to the latest DVR's they offer. No it really isn't greener on the other side of the fence at the DirecTV or TiVo. Unfortunately the new TiVo VOX will by default come with a hydra with no option to go back to the older UI unlike older TiVo DVRs that had Series 5 UI can revert from Hydra if they can't stand Hydra but of course they lose all their recordings in the process. Put simply, Genie, Hopper, TiVo and Hydra are all a mess right now. And even uses of Hydra are now complaining that some of their recordings have not been made that their one passes are not working or that recordings some have been erased before they had a chance to watch it. Okay, it seems like dish and TiVo have much more in common they what your idea of trades suggest. And there have been some people who left TiVo specifically because of Hydra and the rovi metadata mess before it and a few other rotten changes before that too. Meanwhile the older TiVo S3 S4 and S5 work very well not so for Hydra. That's a lot like the older dish VIP DVR that seem to be working better than the new carbon you are DVRs.

For what it's worth, dish echostar already has lifetime license of all TiVo patents--pre-Rovi acquisition-- as part of the old Tom Rogers TiVo patent settlement. Dish also has more recently licensed some Rovi patents that it is using as well. And of course dish, among the other largest and MVPD's, had dumped Gracenote and now have agreements to use the Rovi/TiVo metadata, and that was a a degrade and we're still waiting for Rovi to clean up its mess ever so slowly.

To answer your question OP: no , we're not interested in trading infuriating dish problems for infuriating TiVo problems, nor are we interested in trading in for infuriating DirecTV Genie problems.

You can still revert a new Bolt or Roamio Vox to TE3 with the same process as used before with existing Tivo's that had upgraded to TE4 (Hydra). Nothing has changed in the process that I've seen, although I have avoided TCF and AVS for most of the last 3-4 months, as I grew tired of the bitching from the same people over and over about Live Guide, or tranfers or the folder play etc..

Live guide a huge reason I would not convert to Hydra.

The latest update that reworked the look of Hydra has made the up arrow more Live Guide like. It shows several hours (more than the grid) of each channel as you scroll thru the channels. I like it on the Tivo app for my ipad, as I don't have to go landscape like with Dishanywhere to view the guide, but on the tv I still prefer a traditional grid.

I tried a Tivo Bolt and Mini last year when I moved to my current house. Personally, I did not care for it and after a few months I got rid of it and moved back to Dish and an H3. I think the H3, while not perfect, is far better than the Tivo. The TV Anywhere features work better, The Joey does not lose connectivity like the Tivo Mini did, and I had the option of adding the OTA module. Of all the DVR's I've used (1st Gen DirecTivo, VIP 622, Hopper 1, Google Fiber TV, Tivo Bolt, and Hopper 3) the H3 is the best.

Dishanywhere is better than the Tivo Stream, which is why I use a Slingbox on my Tivo. However in 5 years I've yet to have a Mini lose connection and I have them connected via both ethernet and moca.

Never had a problem with Tivo Minis losing connection, and the UI was SOOOO much faster than the Joey 2.0s I have now. I had a Tivo Stream which worked well for downloading to a mobile device, but out of home streaming never worked for me. Both the Tivo and H3 solutions are good options IMHO. Both are somewhat better than the options from DirecTV, and much, much better than anything I've seen from a cable company.

My Hopper 2000 is still just as slow (maybe slower?) as it was when I was first cursed with the new UI.

Thanks for the info. I was about to buy a Tivo  but if it's skipping recordings too...

Yes Mini's are great, no fees and I too do not lose the connection. Better than my Daughter's Joey in my opinion.
The app is good, not great but does work for me. Overall the Roamio with lifetime (all in) was a good buy.

Note that my TIVO has not been skipping recordings for quite sometime now. My VIP is down to having problems now mainly with History and A&E at times only.

Haven't had Directv in a long time. I couldn't tell you if the Genie is better or not. I never suggested it. I only mentioned the ancient Directv Tivo. But if you want something new, you should try the Xfinity X1 (this is a joke)
