I have been a happy DirecTV customer since 1999, and revolutionized my television watching about 4 years ago with my first TiVO receiver.

I just got an HD TV for the bedroom, which drove me to upgrade to an HR-20 HD DVR. The first one would not power up out of the box, and the second began to drop channels within 3 hours, so DirecTV is replacing that one with a third within 2 business days. I also got the non-HD DVR for $100 so I have had time to realize that compared to a TiVO, it's just a "dumb" recorder. I don't like the controls, the operating sytem. It won't learn what I like.

Bottom line -- what are my options to get a standalone TiVO product to work with the basic DirecTV HD recievers?

Ebay for an old TiVo, HR10-250 for non MPEG4 HD or switch to DISH Notwerk for their 622 that is slightly better than a HR20.

Reality, get used to the different operating system it isn't going to change except hopefully it will become more reliable.

Go to Comcast and upgrade to tivo 3 and get a cable card.

Don't forget - Comcast isn't available everywhere, so it may or may not be an option. (it's not for us)

I had Voom running through an SD Tivo years ago - is it possible to run a D* box through a Tivo S3 box?
