What they appear to be trying to do is capitalized on the Aereo market. If they really wanted to do it they should have put in TiVo stream instead of making it still separate. Then they would have a streaming DVR to replace the Aereo service.
I think they were looking for a cheap price point and something easy to make. This was simply the 4 tuner model with some components ripped out (cablecard slot and QAM tuner). Since the stream wasn't included in the basic model, it would have required effort to fit it. Since the 4 tuner one uses a smaller case, it may not have fit.
The Channelmaster DVR+ with DVR features retails at $399. Hardly 'half that'
The TIVO gives folks a chance to get their feet wet at a low cost, low effort price point.
I guess I don't fully trust the channelmaster to be there long term. It comes and goes out of production and I don't see the financial model for their guide service. I am confident that the TIVO will be around. BTW, this is a new product that took some (minimal) engineering. How does that mesh with the statements about firing all the HW engineers?

Lots of choices.Your right to choose what you hook up. It is worth $12/mo (what I pay) to be able to watch on my schedule and to skip commercials. I personally think there is a market here, and TIVO thinks so as well. Not much different than the $12-15/month fee I was paying with COMCAST and TWC for their DVRs. And the TIVO works better than either of theirs ever did.
Don't know about your area, but I now have around 50 channels of OTA. Add the $8/mo Netflix and bundled Amazon Prime stream, and I am never at a loss for choices. And it is overall significantly cheaper than what I was paying for cable.
No doubt it might be a hit with the OTA folks... I went OTA to save $$$ not to ingest another bill.

That was my thought. It's $299 plus another $50-$100 for a hard drive. I haven't seen the interface yet though but I've read it's being upgraded and supported.
I haven't cut the cord yet, with Dish through the end of the year. The Hopper is great but I'm not finding the programming worth it any longer. I'll stay on the sidelines and figure it out come next year.

Having both a tivo (2 of them) and a HW150PVR I can tell you from experience if you record now and then get a 150PVR. If you want (or need) to record a bunch of stuff get a Tivo.

interesting how a couple weeks ago I got a survey from Tivo since I use an antenna and they asked about various price points and one was "49.99 and 14.99 for service" and how likely was I to purchase one

I found some PVRs today. A Mediasonic and a ViewTV. Has anyone played around with these before? Seems to be just like a VCR and for under $50 looks like a nice toy. Don't think it will be wife friendly though but good enough for the man room.

First, there dis no guide available beyond the limited channel info provided on an ATSC signal. These boxes are time based recording, like old VCRs and are not name based recording. It will not adapt to changes in schedules, so you must stay on top of any changes and fix the timer.
Second, there is only 1 tuner for recording. Boxes like the Roamio have 4 tuners.
Finally, both of these boxes need external hard drive storage, which is not included in the price. This will add $70-100 to the final total price.
None of that is a deal killer, just stuff you need to be aware of.

Just read on CNET the lifetime option is not available. Of course on TIVOs website when you click the service hyperlink it shows the lifetime option.
Read the thread to this point. It has already been discussed earlier in this thread that CNET got it wrong, or at least not correct. I think we need ro wait and see.
Had a brain dump, I read that last week then forgot. I did find this Tweet from a tiVo person but agree, wait and see it is.
