Tigers, Yankees, Diamondbacks agree to blockbuster deal

They were clearly looking "ahead" to Granderson's free agency. The same as the Indians did with Cliff Lee. Technically he was still under a "cheap" contract for 1 more year, but the Indians decided they could get more for him now, then in the last year of his contract. I'm assuming the Tiger's are thinking the same.

Granderson has three years left on his decent contract. They were not looking three years 'ahead'. Totally different than the Cliff Lee situation. They are trying to save money anywhere they could because of all the bad decisions they've made, and they did get some good prospects in return.

Speaking as a Tigers fan...this sucks!

Let's see, we trade one of the most exciting CF's in baseball, our #2 starter, and we get 4 guys, 3 who will not be here, when Jackson and Granderson are free agents. Oh yeah, great trade.

If this was done for salary reasons, they made a huge mistake. This 90+ loss team we now have will draw 1.2M fans, or about half of what they drew last season. The loss at the gate will negate any payroll savings they envisioned. Should have traded Magglio, and ate half of his salary. Would have saved more money, and the team would still have been competitive.

It's going to be a long, long summer. Let's play like it's 2003.

Jack asses.

In 3 years, the economy could be back on it's feet. Detroit fans support a winner, this losing turd of a team they have now won't draw enough to get them into the black. They could have made this trade in July, three years from now, and still got 2 nobodies.

misery loves company. welcome to my world Paul! I feel for you Mo-Towners!

You are the first guy I thought of. I'm not buying into this salary nonsense 100%. I think they're blowing the team up, for another run in 2-3 years. We weren't going to be better next season anyhow. Especially after our bullpen leaving this off season. After the 2010 season, we will shed all the bad contracts, and we'll have some maneuverability, but Granderson's and Jackson's contracts were drops in the bucket to this team. I'm dead serious, the loss in attendance will kill any "savings" this trade may have brought. This area is hurting hugely, but we always find money for a night at the park, if the team is competitive.

Wow, one move and I already don't want to renew my ticket package.

Curtis has a very affordable contract, 3 years left, he is not the payroll issue.

Paying Gary Sheffield $20M to play for the Mets however, and things like that, are.

And Maggs and a few others.
Cabrera has a large contract, but they just got him and I would like to see him stick around ....
Polonco could have been had , had they not thought they had the new kid ready, I hope they know what they are doing, the Tigers have a boatload of 7-8- and 9 hitters.

I call BS on this article .......

They got rid of the wrong contracts, I could see if they got rid a contract that was killing them, they still might, but as of now, no one knows if they are done or not.

You're questioning Mario? Rod (Allen) helped him write it though.

Mario and Rod, sure, why not, except they are not the ones making the calls, their just the ones that have to make this trade sound good.

This could turn out to be an OK trade the problem is they (media) make it sound like it was a contract money issue when they still have MANY contracts that are much much higher and out of whack, I'm ok with a large contract if your getting production out of it.

IF the Tigers are no where to be found come July, Cabrera will be gone as well.

Also, now that they have made the shift to cutting payroll, you will NO LONGER see them get the top notch player coming to Detroit via trade/ FA such as what Pudge started a few years back.
If thats the case, the Tigers will not be contenders for many years again, I;m not talking about competing in the AL Central.

Whoever is the new Tiger centerfielder, all I have to say- good luck filling those shoes.

Oh, it's gonna be this Austin Jackson guy.....
As long as he shows up for Spring Training.
Here's hoping they don't need Rayburn in CF, like someone here posted him as the Starting CF'er. Rayburn is WAY to inconsistent, in the field as well as at the plate.

He'll make a great play in the field and then watch one go over his head the next time.
I use to really like him, but I have soured on him severely after watching him play Right and left field this year.

What I don't understand is, why the hell did they keep Mags around after the mid point of the season when his contract kicked in for another year?

You can't trade junk for junk, there's no point> Guillen, Mags, Rayburn, Thomas, Thames, etc etc. No one wants those role players or bad contracts.

I just don't understand why they don't just come out and say what they really are doing, instead of this bs of no Fire Sale. If it ain't a fire sale then why did you just trade the face of the organization?

I could care less about Edwin Jackson, I'm not convinced the guy wasn't a flash in the pan, BUT Granderson? He's no Derek Jeter, but to us in Detroit he's the closest thing we had.

No thanks Mr. I

I will keep my money next year until your team proves to me again.

Me too.

Looking at this a Yankee Fan which im not, but this is what I think:

I really dont know about this trade. On the one hand Granderson is really talented defensively and he can stroke the ball a bit. On the other hand were giving up AJax who is only 23 years old and still has a high ceiling of potential, plus Granderson is awful against lefties.

I could careless about getting rid of the very ineffective Coke who was awful in the playoffs. Girardi fell in love with him, looking like Torre towards the end of his tenure here with his relievers. Coke was bad during the season as well giving up half of his homeruns to lefty batters when he was being used as a "lefty specialist."

Kennedy still has potential imo. I think he will be a decent pitcher in the MLB within the next year or so.

I dont know. I could live with the trade. Just rather not have to give up AJax here. Hope we dont get disappointed by Granderson's inability to hit lefties which wont change because he's playing in a hitter's park next year.

On some of the other topics I'd be interested to look into Vlad.
I dont think swisher is going to be staying around. I think he will be dealt somewhere.

Wouldnt be surprised if cashman still makes a run at either matt holliday or doc halladay

I almosssssst feel bad for mets fans.......lol :D

Tell me, what do we know about AJax as you called him.
He's NEVER played in the majors yet (that I know of, for any amount of time)
So, we don't know if he can actually hit major league pitching, we have no idea of his defense. He's got HUGE shoes to fill if he wants to play CF in Tiger stadium, sorry, Comerica.
Does AJax hit righties ? how about lefties ?

Tigers gave up a ton to get a Potentially good player.
They had a guy that supposivly did what AJax does, Camron Maybin, he was a Can't Miss" to, he plays occasionally for the Marlins now.
