From the title you could see that this is my 1,000 post here on the forum. Its been a great yr. plus with you guys. All the posters Bill, Sabres, HD, Jimbo, Anders, Iceberg, Remy, etc. have been great.
So lets get on with it.

1) With all of the Mets injuries, do you think the Mets will go shopping? I say yes because they need a thumper in that lineup. I've heard Matt Holiday, Nick Johnson or Adam Dunn name being rumored. I honestly dont care as long as its a thumper because this team cant hit. They get flat very fast. It also hasnt helped that lately the Mets have resembled a cast in the ER with everyone being hurt.

2) Can someone explain to me the situation with ESPNU. I have Comcast so does that mean we are going to get the channel?

3) The NHL will continue to be on NBC. What do you guys think of that? I'm not a big hockey fan but from what I've seen, I think NBC does a good job with the coverage of the NHL.

4) There is a thread on here that says "When will Sabres pass Paul in posts"? By the time I get to either Sabres or Paul it will probably be in 2012.

5) Congrats to the Big Unit. He hasnt been as good as he once was but hes still ok. He helped win the 2001 World Series with Curt Schilling over the Yankees, so he's ok in my book!!!:up

6)Did anyone see Conan O' Brian on the Tonight Show? I did and I thought he did a good job. I'm a Conan fan but he did do a good job.

7) Remember when I posted about how you could be Pirates fan or a Royals fan because they've been lousy for so long. Well, some of the Pirates might answer my question: [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4233488"]Nate McLouth trade angers some Pittsburgh Pirates players - ESPN[/ame]

8) Tom Glavine got released by the Braves. If your team needed some pitching help, would you take a flyer on him?

9) How about the year for Zach Grienke? Second in the AL in wins with 8 and leads the AL in ERA. Good for him because I think he went through some personal stuff so Im glad hes pitching well.

10) Did anyone hear what Rex Ryan said the other day? About how there going to win a Super Bowl within 3 yrs.? The Jets sound like a feisty team although we will just see when they play on the field.

11) I believe I saw this on the506.com but someone brought up making the Winter Classic a series. In other words, instead of playing just one game, have a couple of them. Also, I think the person mentioned about playing some hockey games in domes. I could see both things happening. The NHL needs some gimmicks because they are getting dwarfed by the NBA.

12) What do you guys think of the NHL in general? I have heard that Bettman made a mistake expanding into markets like Columbus, Nashville etc. instead of keeping teams in Hartford, Quebec, Winnipeg.

13) Middle of the 4th quarter last night, NBA Finals, and it was 11:15 at night. Seriously, almost 11:30 of a blow out game 1? The Finals just start too damn late.

Big market team, plenty of money, Of course they will go shopping, who they get is anyones guess.

Yes, I do. They need a big bat, and those are some good options. Dunn would make sense- Washington isn't winning despite his decent numbers.

I think they're good. My only issue is that they don't do regional coverage anymore; you see the same teams- Detroit, Pittsburgh, Rangers. There ar other teams out there that deserve to be in the limelight.

10) Did anyone hear what Rex Ryan said the other day? About how there going to win a Super Bowl within 3 yrs.? The Jets sound like a feisty team although we will just see when they play on the field.

If they're going to do so, the offense HAS to produce points.

Sorry Mets,
I had a real good post going giving you my opinion on many of your thoughts and somewhere along the line my finger bumped some button (not the delete) and it was all gone ... I'm not starting over.

8) Tom Glavine got released by the Braves. If your team needed some pitching help, would you take a flyer on him?
Only if my team was in over 40 slowpitch softball league. Otherwise no.

9) How about the year for Zach Grienke? Second in the AL in wins with 8 and leads the AL in ERA. Good for him because I think he went through some personal stuff so Im glad hes pitching well.
This guy could be the first guy from KC that DESERVES to be on the All Star team since George Brett retired. No longer will the Royals be respresented by some bum pitcher with losing record and an ERA over 6.00 or someone hitting .225. Of course the Royals will NEVER resign this guy. He'll be pitching in Boston or NY before long.

12) What do you guys think of the NHL in general? I have heard that Bettman made a mistake expanding into markets like Columbus, Nashville etc. instead of keeping teams in Hartford, Quebec, Winnipeg.
Bettman is a first class idiot. He made some improvements to the NHL a long time ago, but has done nothing but devalue the league since then. People in Ontario are BEGGING for a 2nd team near Toronto and Bettman won't listen. He believes that the NHL can someday be as popular as the NBA. It won't ever happen. The league is still in terrible financial shape. Several teams are nearly bankrupt, and one even is. NBC televises their games for nothing yet tells the league to play 3 games in the Stanley Cup Finals in 4 days. Unless a change is made the NHL may actually have to cancel a season. Wait, that already happened. :D

1 - The Mets need to. They have to reestablish themselves as a legit team or lose ground to the Yankees.

2 - ESPN, Inc. is changing the roles of ESPNC and ESPNU in terms of packages. More or less a trade is being offered. Whatever role ESPNC has on your system (in terms of being carried or carried in what package) will be taken by ESPNU and v-v. Of course, this is just an offer and individual providers do not have to accept.

3 - NBC does a great job with the NHL. None of the other broadcast networks currently have the free time to cover otherwise.

6 - Is he supposed to be funny? Because he isn't.

7 - Baseball's fundamentally broken economic system continues. Thanks Bud.

8 - For the league minimum, with 3-5 starts at AA first, yes.

9 - Ditto.

10 - Kornheiser said something like "he is really going to be a fun guy to cover for the brief time he is a head coach in the NFL." Yep.

11 - I see no reason that the NHL All-Star Game, the best all-star game in sports when played in its natural North America vs. Europe format, should not be in a rotation among the major domes.

12 - Expansion was the best thing that ever happened to the NHL. If the NHL does not have teams in every part of the USA, then it is not going to be a serious nationwide sport in the USA. That means, no nationwide TV and no mention on SportsCenter, in USA Today, and so on. Just a "Canadian" and "northern US" sport. The NHL failed in Hartford, Quebec and Winnipeg because these are too small of markets, with in two cases, a C$ to US$ situtaion that will, at some point in the next 25 years, be repeated, as will all other C$ to US$ situations over time be repeated.

I fixed it for you.

Congrats on 1k Mets!

I did and I think he's doing a great job. I like Conan a lot. Leno on the other hand, I don't care much for. Leno seems so fake and drone like, where Conan seems real and naturally funny.

9) How about the year for Zach Grienke? Second in the AL in wins with 8 and leads the AL in ERA. Good for him because I think he went through some personal stuff so Im glad hes pitching well.

Good for him!

That's about the worst thing he could do. In a market as challenging as NYC is, why would he make such extreme guarantees? Plus, this is his first head coaching gig. Awfully cocky isn't he? The media will rip him to shreads if his teams stink. Especially now that he's predicting the Super Bowl for his team.

12) What do you guys think of the NHL in general? I have heard that Bettman made a mistake expanding into markets like Columbus, Nashville etc. instead of keeping teams in Hartford, Quebec, Winnipeg.

The NHL is a tough sport to start up in cities with no professional hockey history. For them to attract new fans, they first need to have a team that's worth rooting for. Winning will attract fans and will build the roots for a solid fan base in these new cities. Give it time Bettman. Rome wasn't built in a day.

13) Middle of the 4th quarter last night, NBA Finals, and it was 11:15 at night. Seriously, almost 11:30 of a blow out game 1? The Finals just start too damn late.

I was asleep at halftime. Unless I have a vested interest in either team or it's a weekend, my old bones can't stay up that late.

Seems like it's always the non-hockey fan who thinks he has the sport all figured out.

Sandra

I don't know Sandra...he may not have it figured out...but he sounds like he has it pretty close.

Congrats! MET!

In the 'Fan of the NBA why or why not thread' he goes on and on telling us why the NBA is terrible. In this thread he tells us how popular the NBA is so he can put down hockey. That's why he loses credibility.

Don't you hate people who just want to argue? :D

And he only has it close from a non-hockey fan's perspective. True fans of the sport know it's far from perfect, but don't spew the kind of generalities he did. I could pick apart his argument point by point, but it would be a waste of time, since he obviously hates hockey. And the NBA too, except when he's comparing it to hockey.

Whatever problems the NBA has they don't have any bankrupt franchises, don't get pushed around by freeloading TV networks, and they haven't ever cancelled a season. My issues with the NBA are more with its presentation. There is no doubt that the NBA is extremely popular and successful. While I am not much of a hockey fan I have nothing against those who like the sport. My problem with the NHL is that it is professional sports version of General Motors. Hockey fans deserve to have a league that is well run and doesn't risk financial ruin. Instead they have a dim witted commissioner who has a delusional vision for the league that undermines its future.

In answer to the Comcast ESPNU question, when I was checking out Comcast before dropping D*,I was told by CSR,it would be on before the start of football season (SEC) that was the good news. She had no answer on WGN America. Vary Bad news. GO CUBBIES !!!

While I am not much of a hockey fan I have nothing against those who like the sport.

Then you understand why hockey fans don't give much weight to your criticisms of the league or the sport. Avid fans of the sport know what the league is doing well, and what the league is not doing well. And both go far beyond your simplistic generalizations.

You do not need to be a hater of hockey to know that financial, the NHL is just a few steps above the MLS. It is well known the issues the NHL has, not to mention how badly the league has been run. You can show PROOF that the NHL has NOT been either run poorly or is NOT in deep financial problems...then I will see your point.

Sandra

so YOUR saying that hockey fans don't give a hoot about the situation the league is in....they are just getting great hockey and they just don't wanna hear about it...? your kidding right? seriously....??!! I mean isn't THAT a 'simplistic generalization' of hockey fans?

...and another thing, he is neither disputing the greatness of hockey nor their fans...he is stating that the league is run in a Mickey Mouse way being lead by Goofy....
