If you have a bad spot, indicated by stopping or error message, it might be best to leave that recording and thus not try to use that area of the disk in a new recording and have another failure. We don't know Dish's algorithm but it likely is something simple like find 1/2 or 1/3 of the biggest space for the first segment. The internal disk probably has links to multiple segments.

For the EHD it knows the size needed and, I believe, it uses only contiguous files, probably on a first-fit basis and thus it is very likely to hit the same bad spot again and again. Change the recording name to say "Bad 1", etc. so there will be no duplicate rejection.

This might not apply to OTA bad recordings.
