I'm thinking of making the switch from Dish to DirecTV due to the great deal they have running right now (by my calculation I will save several hundred dollars over 2 years). However, I have about 30 hours of recorded TV on the Dish receiver right now. If I disconnect Dish, will I be able to watch those shows since they are stored on the DVR, or will that basically shut down the DVR entirely (I believe I have 30 days to return the receiver)? If I keep the service active for a month but physically disconnect the satellite feed, can I watch the shows? Just not sure how to deal with the transition, so any advice is appreciated!

You may be able to get a few days out of the EHD programming but no where near 30. The EHD function will go away when the DVR gets a signal that the account it closed or it doesn't see an authorization signal for a while.
Saving $200 may not be worth the upset of a new system and if you don't switch in the third year, you'll lose all of those savings and more.
If you're getting more of what you want for your money, switching may be just the ticket but make sure you investigate all aspects of DIRECTV (especially the non-programming issues).

Unless you get a recorder I think it is called an HDD recorder which is and extra recorder and connect it to Dish and record all the programs on to that

If the files are on an EHD, the only way to save them is to play them into a DVD recorder or a PC with a component connection or use a Hauppauge PVR with a component connection.

Just spend the weekend watching the shows. If they are commercial TV it will probably be 20 hours of actual TV, and you probably could catch a lot of stuff on the net with free Hulu to avoid having to watch it right away.
When I took my 722k camping. I hooked it up withhout the dish and it could not find the EHD. You have to have the dish conected and aimed properly for the receiver to recognize the EHD.
