Just about 6 months ago Verizon came out with their Treo 650 and I wanted one, so the day it came out I purchased one.

It was a god send, now no matter where I was I was able to access SatelliteGuys and our servers. This has come in handy many times, I have been able to SSH into the server and fix items without having to bug LER our server guru too much. :)

It also had a web browser which was ok but it was really slow.

A few months back I heard about about the Treo 700w, when I heard it worked on Verizons new EDVO newtwork I wanted one. While the Treo 650 did connect to Verzions X1 Network the adverage speed was around 56k, with EDVO I could get broadband like speeds, plus it had Internet Explorer not the stinky browser which was built into the 650.

Well CES came and I got to look at the 700w. I wanted one. Later that morning my wife called me and asked me if I had seen anything I liked and I told her about the Treo 700w.

The next day I was at CES and my 650 rang, it was my wife telling me she just got me a 700w, I was so happy but depressed at the same time, I was happy because I wanted it, and depressed because it was in Connecticut and I was stuck in Las Vegas. :)

When I got home I ripped into the box, I was very happy to see that all of my accessories for the 650 would also work on the 700 including the battery. I slipped my fully charged battery out of my 650 and put it in the 700w. It lit up...

And it took forever to boot, about 3 times longer then the 650 took.

I went online to Verizons website to activate it and I was told I could not activate the 700w online, so my wife called and activated it for me.

The first thing I did was go into internet explorer to pull up satelliteguys. I was disapointed, it pulled it up faster but not much faster then the 650. I also did not like the fact to view the page I had to keep scrolling back and forth to read anything. But I slipped it into PDA mode and was MUCH happier, and I could also tell the difference in speed now.

I got to be honest for the first few days I HATED this thing. It would lock up from time to time so I would miss phone calls. The keyboard was laid out a little differently, for example on the K key on the 650 was the : however on the 700w the : is not on the keyboard at all, instead on the K key is the ;

I was honestly thinking of taking the phone back...

But then it grew on me.

Then I found an application which lets me listen to Sirius and XM on my phone, I liked that.

Then I figured out how I can watch TV from home on my Treo using ORB, I loved that.

Then I found a site like GotomyPC.COM which lets me access my PC's at home and work (the site is logmein.com) , I really loved that...

The I found another application which I really love, and that is PDANet which lets me connect my Treo 700 to my laptop and gives me a full broadband connection. I must tell you doing it this way is so much faster and better then trying to view the web on the phone. I did some speed tests on EDVO, and the speed tests went from 200kbits all the way up to 742.4KBits!

The other day we went to the Laundrymat as our Washer broke, and I took my Treo 700w and my laptop in and was able to isten to music and browse the web just like I was sitting home. I was very impressed.

I will admit this phone is like an Echostar receiver after its first released (aka very buggy) about the worst thing it does is its phone functions just sometimes it locks up where you can't answer the phone when its ringing, or worse yet it dont ring at all.

I am told by Palm they are working on a firmware issue which should correct all of these issues.

One VERY annoying feature that I didn't talk about yet and the biggest downfall of this phone is the amount of memory the phone has.

While it gives you 50+ MB of space to store your programs, the free memory to run programs is a major issue. They only give you 24.45 MB to run your programs in and on a clean reboot with nothing running you only have 9.35 MB of memory free to use for your applications. There are times when I am listing to XM and trying to open an email and get the dreaded Out Of Memory Error. :(

Lets hope a software update can fix this issue.

So should you get one?

It's really hard to say... If you have a 650 now WAIT for them to fix the issues the phone has. While the speed is nice, the headaches aren't.

But because of all the things I could do now that I couldn't on my 650 it makes the 700w worth it to me. :)

So what your saying is the 650 is the "stable release" and the 700w is more like the "beta" version. :)

Does the 700w have GPS/WAAS capability?

Q: Why is the Treo 700w so buggy?
A: It runs Windows Mobile!

Scott,

Have you ever considered the Samsung I730? It seems very cool With 802.11B Wifi Built in also.

I Wanting one but just can't spare the money right now.

Does anyone have a I730? Do you like it?

Thanks in advance,
Cegarrett

Well I think I am going to bring the 700w back.

Its driving me nuts with its frequent lockups, it sucks when people call you and they can't reach you because your phone is locked up.

Instead I am going to go get an XV6700 which does everything a Treo 650 does AND MORE! It has build in Wifi, it has a slide out keyboard, you can use it with a USB cable and it's $100 cheaper!

Like Scott, I too got the 700w but mainly for my wife who will not be such a power user. She likes it but is having some problems learning to manage Exchange server e-mail right now. The rest works great for her. I came up on the 15 day return and she refused so I guess we keep it!

I knew about the memory issue with the 700w at CES. I crashed the 700 with the Palm engineer standing by 3 times surfing the web for media content on my own website. It cannot sustain WMP and IE at the same time. There are many issues but only those that will plague power users, like us.

As an alternative to owning a 700w for myself, I intent to get the latest offering by Verizon, not a new phone but one that Sprint recently had exclusively. The Starcom 6700. Now this baby has 26 Mb of program ram at startup and you saw what Scott reported. It also has a 33% faster processor and full 64 Mb of storage ram, similar to the 700w. It has a true 128MB. I got to try one out side by side with the Treo700w at the Microsoft booth and the Palm rep was there too,... silent! The Starcom was noticeably snappier at loading websites which is all I did to compare the two. Then I launched WMP and downloaded a couple of 30 second media fuiles and one 12 Mb file and they played full screen. I was sold! The Treo 700w for my wife and the Starcom for me. It is also available for $399 on the Verizon website as of midnight last night. The disadvantage of it is that it has a larger screen size than the Treo700w which makes button keyboard impossible. So the Starcom hides a larger keyboard as a slide out the side and rotates to wide screen for typing. For some this is bad and others like me it is good. It supports full BT and wifi "b" The Treo requires a SD card wifi which kills possibility of wifi large files due to NO SD memory now. However, a third party makes a bolt on wifi adapter that keeps the SD slot free on the Treo. It costs $149. However, what I found, unlike Scott, is the EVDO on the phone while not cable modem was very fast and made the wifi unnecessary for web surfing. Only in the download of large files was it a problem and then where to put the large files w/o SD card if you had the wifi SD.

What I find strange is the extreme hype Palm gets by it's followers. The WM5 version had 100 times as much hype as the 600 and 650 combined. Now, what I hear from many is that the 700w has all these issues and blames it in WM not the hardware. Let's see how another device compares. I should know after a week with the Starcom 6700.

Besides the internet We found the camera to be great and I liked the video quality from the Treo as well. Scott knows I love shooting video with my still cam and this will offer even new challenges for shooting. By comparison, the Starcom looks even better as it's camera has a strobe LED flash that lights up but in no way gets real flash quality, especially on wide angle. In video mode it switches to a small flash light to help. But as a videographer, I won't be relying on this feature much, it is a cute innovative gadget though. Also the Starcom seems to have a 2x optical zoom on the lens. I think it allows close up capability. This could come in handy for me in shooting pics of spec sheets text.

BTW- I read that while the third party app for tethering your Treo700 for laptop EVDO can be done, the BT use has been disabled by Verizon because the Palm BT implementation did not meet the requirements of Verizon's EVDO. They announced that Verizon is working on this with Palm and expect a fix sometime later this summer, early fall, from Palm that will allow the Treo to be used as a broadband modem to your laptop via BT.

For you and me, Scott, I think the 6700 based on my experience so far is the crem' de la crem

We may feel differently after we have one for awhile but if that happens, then dualcor may be the only thing left that works for power users. www.dualcor.com

One tip the Treo engineer said is you must go into the programs running and remove them often. This is an issue that seems different than win2003. The MS Mobile expert said this is something Palm did that isn't the way WM5 works.

I believe the 6700 is the same as the CIngular 8125. I wonder why Verizon has released it and Cingular has not? Im seriously considering dropping my MPx220 for an 8125.

I need to stay with Cingular because I need GSM, otherwize I would just switch to Verizon.

Thre was some talk of Palm updating the Palm OS and releasing a 700p by mid summer but I have heard nothing of a GSM version. I could never figure what the advantage of GSM was except if you like to transport hardware selections among same number . I pretty much try to get one phone to do all and then don't need to swap around. We did try to give my daughter our V600 GSM but it seems the carriers lock the phones to their sim cards so you need to unlock them to fool around. I checked into that and let's just say it would be cheaper to buy another phone. Educate me! what am I missing by losing sim capability?

CIngular 8125- Look around mid Feb- March 1 for GSM / EDGE version. That's what I hear.

Well I like GSM, and rather than buy Cingular branded phone, I purchased an unlocked phone outright from a dealer. I can use any GSM carrier in the world on my phone (quad band, v3 razr) plus I can have other phones and just swap the sim at will. For example, business trip take a PDA phone, night out on the town, take my razr because of its size.

And while I havent yet gone overseas with the phone, I plan to soon, and it will be nice to just buy a prepaid sim overseas and plug it in. Thats some of why I like it, but obviously its not for everyone.

I go to Aruba a few times a year, so I did this as well. Now, whenever I go down there, I just pop my SETAR SIM card in and Im all ready to go. Cingular was even nice enough to give me the unlock code for my MPx220.

Yeah Cingular has quirky rules about unlock codes. Usually they will give them out after a while, but not usually right after you sign up. I initially started with another phone and then went to a black razr within 2 months, so I had to outright buy a phone regardless, so I got an unlocked euro-Vodafone version.

I picked up the VX6700 yesterday and have not put it down since. I love this phone.

This is what the Treo 700 should have been.

You love all your new toys for the first couple of days... The true test will be when the next phone comes out if you are ready to trade it in!

Thanks for the SIM card usage ideas. Some day when I travel more internationally, I may go back to one. For now, I can say I tried my T-Mobile phone service in Mexico last October and Nada! could not get it to work. I later found out the awful process to activate it. They would not let me activate until I got to Mexico and then said to call and set it up. I followed those instructions up to the point where I tried to call on the cell phone. No go as I could not get through. One of my clients had the same problem with TM. But he got mad and made a complaint call to TM via a Mexican pay phone. He is now set up in Mexico. However in Europe, T-Mobile set him up with no problems. Unfortunately, I plan to travel in Eorope where I will be without Cell service so sat phone may be the best thing. That or sat internet service and Skype or something similar. Isn't it nice we do have options?

Scott- Start another thread on that XV6700 please. Want to know how the phone works for clarity and BT volume. I'm happy you got the XV6700 so you can be first to test it out. I should be back in Jacksonville on Sunday and will be looking to buy one locally or order one online. Yesterday, I was in Newport News and the cell service from T-MObile was so bad. Speak 5 words and 3 are skipped. Try to carry on a conversation like that to get directions to my work location. Impossible. I logged on to the internet with my Verizon EVDO and had 5 bars of signal and got to their web site listing of their location. Tonight, I'm at the Beach, Virginia Beach and have solid TM signal. I like my Ipaq 6315 but am growing less and less patient with the service.

After Reading About it I stopped by Verizion and took a look at the XV6700. Boy it is Slick Definitely nicer than My Samsung I700 at this point there is no reason I'd look at the I730 with this thing on the market. As soon as I get my taxes back I'm getting one (But don't tell my wife,Yet) ;-)

Downside to the Treo 700w is that Verizon cripled the full functionality of the device like all its phones.

Verizion has a 6 month exclusive contract for the 700w
