Thursday morning, around 8:30AM Eastern, will bring us Oscar nominations. Who are you rooting for? Thoughts and predictions!

Interesting possibilities in the best picture race. The Dark Knight stands a very good chance at a nomination. There is even a fair amount of talk for Wall-E to become the second ever nominated animated film (the first since animation got it's own category).

If critics are to be believed, these would be the two most deserving, given their place in the aggregate of top 10 lists: MCN Awards Watch: The Awards Scoreboard

Also interesting to see how "CCoBB," "Doubt," "Milk," "Frost/Nixon," "The Westler," and "Revolutionary Road" do as well, and if anyone remembers "In Bruges" from earlier this year.

Saw "Benjamin Button" with my wife a couple of weeks ago. I liked it, she didn't. It's one of those movies that the Academy loves, because it recreates a world that doesn't exist any more, and in this case, several worlds.

Technically, it was a marvelous movie, but the plot dragged a bit.

The Academy doesn't care if a bunch of people liked a movie and went and saw it. That is what I hate about the Oscars. That should count for some part of who wins, not all, but some part.

I don't see a lot of movies at the public theater anymore. Instead I wait to see them once they come out on DVD/Blu-Ray and watch them in the HT. Hopefully a few will come out before Feb.22nd so I can have a more informed opinion...

I did hear Benjamin Button was a Forrest Gump Clone though...

And by most accounts, "The Reader" was a mediocre movie. At 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, it is on the verge of being rotten. Heck, it has a 58/100 rating on Metacritic. (Both sites aggregate critical response, the former counting the percentage of reviews deemed positive, the second averaging the actual ratings critics give out, like 2.5/4 stars and so on.) It is hardly among the top 10 movies much less the top 5.

At least Robert Downey Jr. got in for Tropic Thunder. The only redeaming part about these nominations.

In the minds of many, 2 of the best films of the year were snubbed with The Dark Knight and Wall-E.

Unfortunately the Academy like to make sure they pick what the public doesn't like, so they can be all snobby and self righteous about liking artier films.

At the risk of sounding "snobby and self-righteous", I didn't particularly think either of those films deserved a nod for best film. I liked them alright, I suppose, but I had largely forgotten both within a few hours of seeing them.

Frankly, I think if Heath Ledger were still alive, the Dark Knight would have been long forgotten, except by those who are "into" Batman.

On the other hand, I haven't seen a single one of the films nominated for best picture.
