I'd think with the advent of Hulu/Netflix/etc., DirecTV (and Comcast and others) will have to get smarter about all this. I don't watch 98% of the channels they have, and yet I'm somehow paying for all of them. I wonder if it's just a matter of time for these companies to be forced to change their model and allow people to select and only pay for the channels they want.

One disadvantage of all these channels - in addition to having to pay for them - is all the UI they have to build around favorite lists, scrolling up/down, etc. If you only had the ~20 channels you actually wanted, the whole system would be tons easier.
