Microsoft announces the Surface Pro 4, 50% more powerful than the MacBook Air

http://www.phonearena.com/news/Micr...50-more-powerful-than-the-MacBook-Air_id74436

Today, October 6, Microsoft announced the Surface Pro 4. This productivity-oriented workhorse features a sleek and elegant design, Intel-powered hardware, and a bunch of accessories, such as type covers, power adapters, Ethernet connectors, and a dock station to enhance the user experience.

Design

The Surface Pro 4 features a large 12.3-inch display with a 2160 x 1440 resolution, which is on par with competing tablets in the Pro category, such as the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 and the Apple iPad Pro. The tablet boasts thin screen bezels and its overall look is reminiscent of the Dell XPS 13, an almost border-less fashion piece of a laptop. The device is built out of aluminum alloy and has the typical sleek, but solid appearance of Microsoft's Surface Pro line.
In addition, the Pro 4 carries a single USB Type-C port, along with a charging connector. The USB port can't be used for charging, as to ensure compatibility with Surface Pro 3 accessories.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is official!

The footprint of the Surface Pro 4 remains the same as its predecessor while increasing the display size to 12.3-inches with slimmer bezels round the edges.

Hardware wise we're getting a 6th-gen Intel Core Skylake processor, 50% faster than a MacBook Air and 30% faster than a Surface Pro 3, up to 1TB SSD storage options and up to 16GB RAM. We're also looking at a fingerprint scanner (hello, Windows Hello), a hybrid cooling system and all wrapped up in a body that's just 8.4mm thick.

Microsoft's Surface Book is its first (and 'ultimate') laptop

http://www.engadget.com/2015/10/06/microsofts-surface-book-is-its-first-and-ultimate-laptop/

Man this is a nice device..

And then Microsoft dropped a bombshell on stage. "What if you wanted a Surface... But you wanted a laptop Surface, something with a bigger screen, something with the perfect typing experience of a laptop," Microsoft's Panos Panay said on at its Windows 10 devices event. "We made the ultimate laptop; we made Surface Book." That's right, it's Microsoft's first in-house laptop -- with a 227 DPI 13.5-inch display, an NVIDIA GeForce GPU and a 12-hour battery life. Microsoft is calling it the "ultimate" laptop ...but just like every other Surface in the product line, it's still a detachable, convertible PC.

HP wants you to use its new 8-inch Windows tablet to get work done

http://www.engadget.com/2015/10/07/hp-envy-note-8/

The nice thing about 8-inch Windows tablets, aside from how portable they are, is that they're often superinexpensive and come with Microsoft Office pre-installed. The challenge for big tech companies is getting consumers to actually want to use the desktop on such a tiny screen. HP is the latest to try its hand, with a new device called the Envy Note 8. As you'd expect of any tablet being billed as a productivity device, it comes with a keyboard -- in this case, a Bluetooth accessory that allows you to view the tablet in landscape or portrait mode, and that has a slot in the back where you can stow the device when you're not using it.

HP's updated Stream laptops offer better battery life for your buck

http://www.engadget.com/2015/10/07/hp-stream-11-13-refreshed/

HP's inexpensive Stream laptops weren't perfect by any means, but with a starting price of $200, we were able to forgive a lot, including so-so displays, sluggish performance and sometimes-flaky touchpads. Today HP is refreshing both the Stream 11 and 13, and while neither seems to address the flaws we found in the original, they at least keep the same price, all while bringing longer battery life -- and in the case of the smaller one, a lighter design. In particular, the 11.6-inch model now weighs 2.6 pounds, down from 2.74. The 13.3-inch version remains unchanged at 3.42 pounds, and there's an optional touchscreen for the larger model as well.

The HP Spectre x2 is like the Surface Pro, but cheaper and lower-specced

http://www.engadget.com/2015/10/07/hp-spectre-x2/

What timing: Just a day after Microsoft announced the Surface Pro 4, HP is unveiling a similar-looking 2-in-1 of its own. Though HP has made laptop/tablet hybrids before, the new 12-inch Spectre x2 is the first from the company to rock a built-in kickstand, à la Microsoft's tablet. Far from being just an imposter, though, the x2 sets itself apart in several key ways, with a more adjustable kickstand and a sturdy, potentially more comfortable keyboard. Oh, and that keyboard actually comes in the box (ahem, Microsoft).

Dell updates XPS line of laptops, including Skylake and an InfinityEdge XPS 15

http://www.neowin.net/news/dell-upd...s-including-skylake-and-an-infintyedge-xps-15

Fresh on the heels of Microsoft’s seismic hardware event earlier this week, Dell has announced some major updates to its flagship XPS laptop line. The XPS 12 2-in-1 and XPS 15 both got major changes while the already class-leading XPS 13 got the spec bump it needed to remain on top with Intel’s 6th Generation Core “Skylake” platform already replacing the 5th Generation “Broadwell” CPUs.

All three devices offer standard features for enterprise customers looking to minimize configuration headaches, like Latitude docking station support which will be coming in 2016, Gorilla Glass NBT screens for the touch versions and 6th Generation Core processors, as well as shipping standard with Windows 10 natively.

Dell's buying EMC for $67 billion in the biggest tech deal ever

http://www.engadget.com/2015/10/12/dell-emc-acquisition/

Dell has agreed to buy EMC Corporation for a deal worth $67 billion. While EMC isn't a household name, some of its products and subsidiaries are. In addition to selling cloud services, storage and analytic solutions to enterprise companies, EMC owns the security firm RSA and the virtualization solution VMware. The deal is huge -- it's being billed as the largest tech acquisition in history. EMC is probably worth twice as much as Dell itself right now, and has some 70,000 employees worldwide.

Acer's new portable all-in-one Windows 10 PC is already old news

http://www.theverge.com/2015/10/12/9505059/acer-portable-all-in-one-z3-700

Acer unveiled a pair of new Windows 10 machines today — a convertible notebook and a portable all-in-one PC. However, these are familiar designs that don't offer much excitement, and, unlike some of the recent news we've seen from the industry, it's unlikely they'll help the firm's prospects in the long run. (The latest figures from IDC show the Taiwanese company is now the fifth biggest PC vendor, slipping behind even Apple in the second and third quarters of 2015.)

Toshiba’s new DynaPad is a thinner and lighter rival to Microsoft's Surface

http://www.theverge.com/2015/10/13/9517903/toshiba-dynapad-microsoft-surface-rival-2-in-1

Toshiba's first DynaPad, released in 1993, came at a time when touchscreen tablets were new to the tech world. The Japanese company's new DynaPad — a Windows 10 two-in-one officially announced today after a prototype appeared at IFA 2015 last month — joins a market flooded with tablet-sized touchscreen devices. But even though, like many of its peers, it looks a lot like Microsoft's own Surface, with a thin design, keyboard dock, and 12-inch display, Toshiba says its new DynaPad has some of its own unique features.

Too bad Surface Pro 4 doesn't qualify as a new purchase!

High school student claims to have hacked CIA chief's personal email

http://www.engadget.com/2015/10/19/high-school-student-claims-to-have-hacked-cia-chiefs-personal-e/

The New York Post reports that an unnamed source claiming to be an American high school student has contacted the paper with evidence that he had compromised the personal email account of CIA Director John Brennan. Among the documents reportedly stored in Brennan's unsecured personal email: his 47-page application for top-secretsecurity clearance, personal information (including SSNs) on more than a dozen top US intelligence officials and some damning emails discussing "harsh interrogation techniques" used on suspects.

Lenovo's new Yoga 900 gets Windows 10, Skylake CPUs, QHD+ display...and yes, it comes in gold

http://www.neowin.net/news/lenovos-...lake-cpus-qhd-displayand-yes-it-comes-in-gold

Nice device.
360-degree hinges have become increasingly popular on modern notebooks, allowing the screen to open and fold back over itself until flat, offering various configurations to suit different types of usage. Of course, Lenovo's Yoga line offers perhaps the most famous examples of this type of device - and the company has just unveiled the newest addition to its range.

Storage giant Western Digital buys flash memory behemoth SanDisk for $19 billion

http://www.neowin.net/news/storage-...-flash-memory-behemoth-sandisk-for-19-billion

Western Digital today announced that it has acquired SanDisk for a whopping sum of $19 billion in cash and stock. The deal values SanDisk’s common stock at $86.50 per share, a 15% premium on the previous day’s closing price.

The deal brings together two of the world's largest storage companies. The buyout gives WD access to the growing market of flash memory chips, and more importantly gives it a new income channel to offset its recent revenue drop.
