I have the opportunity to buy 2 new Direct TV receivers, still in their packaging, for an insanely low price. The party selling them claims that Direct sent them to them, then they decided not to go with Direct. They called Direct to see about returning them but Direct supposedly has no record of sending them the equipment.

If I were to set up an account with Direct, would I be able to legally use these receivers. One is a model R16-300 and it states on the box that it is a leased receiver. The other is a D12-100 and says nothing about being leased.

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

If you set up an account with Directv they will give you receivers.

I hope they didn't get dented when they fell off the truck

Joed32 is correct, Directv will give you the same receivers free as a new subscriber (they will be leased). They will also install the dish for free.

If you really want these, get the serial numbers and call to see if Directv will activate them.

Thanks for the replies guys. The reason I was considering this is that I figured it would be cheaper if I owned the receivers and could bypass whatever the lease fees are, so I guess I'll call Direct and see how far off the truck they actually fell.

The only thing you would save on is any upfront costs. For the montly charge there is no difference between the $4.99 mirroring charge for a owned or the $4.99 monthly lease fee receiver fee.
