Hello,
I need help with the following.
I have an old dish from Dish Network, and I bought a Technosat receiver TS-9000 Super Ultra.
I am in zip 92128, and would like to receive TELSTAR 5.
Can I use my existing receiver and dish to receive telstar 5 or any FTA TV?
Thanks,
MCH

Two reasons the Dish 500 will not work:

- The dish is too small for linear Ku signals, which includes most FTA up there including 97w. You'll need at least a 30 inch dish for most FTA.

- The LNBFs on a Dish 500 are circular DBS, not linear Ku. You'll need linear Ku LNBFs for 97w.

TS 5 from San Diego

Hello Guys,
I am still strugling to get FTA, I just puchased 30" dish, and and KU LBN. My receiver is Technosat 9000 super ultra, and it is widely used in Europe, and Asia.
I am getting an excellent signal on TS 5 for paid TV, but not FTA.
My dish is facing 120 SE, and dish elevation 50.8 according to few websites (Zip code 92128). The store where I got the dish from suggested an elevation of 35 for San Diego, but either one doesn't seem to work.
If I am getting a strong signal does it mean my satellite set up is correct?
I am wondering if someone can tell me what I am doing wrong!
Thanks you foor your help.

I believe you are aimed wrong.
You should shoot 132.4º by the compass, and 46.2º elevation.
And, the LNB should be skewed -28.3º, too.

Also, the settings for your LNB local oscillator frequency will be different depending if you have a Standard or a Universal LNB.
What brand and model is it? (any markings?)

Prior to trying to align your dish to any satellite, follow Iceberg's instructions to select a strong transponder on your receiver.
Failure to do so, will make any alignment nearly impossible.

Thank you for the speedy reply. I checked the LNB box, and it doesn't say Universal LNB. But when I called the store, they said Standard LNB. Here are the specifications:
Brand Name: PowerSat
Dual Polarization
Model: PS41 - 1075
Noise: 0.4dB
Input: 11.7-12.2Ghz
L.O.: 10.750Ghz

Disgned in USA

As for aiming my dish, I understood that I only need to make sure of the followings:
Shoot 132.4º by the compass, and 46.2º elevation.
As for the LNB, I am not too sure how I can make it skewed -28.3º, do you mean it should be at 7 o'clock position when I am facing the dish?
On my receiver, I have freq=12152 and symbol rate = 22000, polarity = V.

I hope the provided information would help identifying if it's Universal or not.

Thanks,

These sites give a picture of which way to rotate the LNB for + or - settings.
I refer you to them, because it's easier to remember where to look , than to remember which way to twist.

Satellite Look Angles Satellite Heading Calculator Azimuth Elevation Skew Tilt LNBF Latitude and Longitude values
put in "IA5" and "San Diego"
unfortunately, that calculator doesn't correct for the local magnetic deviation, so the heading is off a bit.
note the picture showing how to twist the LNB

Satellite Finder - © Satellite AV
I put in 92128 zip
Under "location matches", I chose San Diego and clicked "select"
next page, in the middle and on the blue tab, click: "full satellite list"
scroll down the list to 97º bird, and click to select
now, at the bottom of that page, is the picture showing which way to twist your LNB.

Both programs agree that you twist the LNB clockwise, when facing the dish/lnb

As for your LNB, it's Standard: ( L.O.: 10.750Ghz )

And from the link I gave above for Iceberg's list of transponders to tune up on, it says:
" 97 (G25 AKA IA5)-12177 V 23000 or 12152 H 20000 "

I think we're gettin' close ! . :up

Great! I will try your suggestion tomorrow morning, and let you know.
Thanks,

hello Anole,
I followed your suggestions, and managed to get over 60 paid TV ($$TV). Does this mean the set up is ok, and I am very close to find those FTA? As you can, I am very junior with satellite set up.
Thanks,

What are some of the service names of the scrambled channels? That will tell us what satellite you are hitting. There are plenty of scrambled signals on 97w in addition to the plethora of free stuff. I'm not sure how many, since I almost always do a 'FTA only' scan of that bird. In addition to the scrambled channels, you should be getting nearly a hundred clear channels when you are on 97w, so you might be hitting something like one of the BEV satellites instead.
