I have at my home a DirecTV system with an HD DVR box (H23-700, I believe is the number) and the SWM-Line 5-LNB antenna. I have a cabin that I have installed a simple 18-in round DireTV dish on and acquired the 101W satellites. I want to see if this will work: Can I buy a simple DirecTV IRD box to leave at the cabin, and simply pop out the activation card from my home box, take it to the cabin, put it in the box there, and have it provide me the basic DirecTV channels from the 101W position?

Each receiver requires its own card which is activated for that receiver. Just swapping cards back and forth will not do what you want. You'll need the receiver to be authorized on your account. Now using that receiver in a location away from your primary location is a violation of the Terms of Service.

I'm sure thousands of people do it. It's still property the OP owns. I don't see anything wrong with it.

You can buy a basic DIRECTV receiver, call DIRECTV to activate it on your account, say it's for your kids bedroom, then leave it at the cabin. If they say it has to be connected to a phone line that's BS.

The recommended solution would be to take your receiver from your main home with you when you are at the cabin. The H23 will work for the SD channels with the 18" dish just fine.

As was posted, you can't simply swap cards from one receiver to another. You could move the box from your home to the cabin and no one would know the difference. Although technically not allowed, it would work. In fact, if you told Directv each time about it, they would authorize other local channels if indeed you are in a different dma at the cabin.
