DTV should really add a little bit more channels to the family package for people experiencing economic hardship and can not cancel because they are locked in under contract!

I feel your pain, but it doesn't work like that. D has to pay the owners of these channels so much money per sub. If they do that, then people who do have jobs can just downgrade their package to family causing D* to lose a lot of revenue they could use to pay these owners. Which in the end would effect everyone. D* is a business and they do allow you to suspend your account for up to 6 months. During that time, you could just get basic cable. You could also call the retention department and see if they could do something to help you.
